Brief Summary of Job Duties
Works as a member of the Life Sciences Computing Group (LSCG) with minimal guidance performing tasks that provide a high level of computing functionality for desktop systems serviced by the LSCG. Installs and networks computing equipment in keeping with LSCG, UCSB and UCOP policies. Researches, troubleshoots and resolves hardware, software and networking issues on Windows and Macintosh computers and other equipment such as printers, phones, tablets, and NAS devices for users in offices, research and instructional labs, and multi-use facilities.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Prior experience conducting escalated, broad technical support including hardware and software tests, analyzing test results and producing reports of conclusions and recommendations.
  • Prior experience developing and administering formal technical training to users at a variety of levels.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated skill in configuring, troubleshooting and supporting escalated end user client systems including desktop, laptop and mobile computing devices.
  • Broad knowledge of enterprise system functions, dependencies and interactions and ability to use this information to troubleshoot.
  • Requires interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Advanced skill at creating technical documentation for complex processes and applications.
  • Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • General knowledge of other areas of IT. Intermediate knowledge of IT-related products and services.
  • Demonstrates problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge of unit's business processes.
  • Working knowledge of organization computer requirements, recommendations and policies including security standards.
  • Demonstrated judgment to delegate or escalate issues appropriately.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties
  • 50% Desktop Support - Provides support for computing systems serviced by the LSCG. Acts as point of contact for installing new hardware and software and networking new computers and network aware devices in accordance with LSCG, UCSB and UCOP policies. Researches, troubleshoots and resolves hardware, software and networking issues on PC and Macintosh computers and other devices (i.e. printers and NAS devices, tablets and phones) and applies due diligence to ensure that issues are properly resolved in a timely manner. Assists with deployment and maintains computing equipment in instructional labs and both open and closed access, multi-user computer facilities. Provides hardware recommendations and quotes, removal of discarded computer equipment and acts as liaison with vendors on behalf of users to resolve designated warranty and other issues. Develops and maintains knowledge of hardware and software as required to identify, troubleshoot and resolve problems and disseminate knowledge to others in the LSCG as necessary.
  • 30% Application Support - Assists users with installation and use of software used in support of administrative (i.e. Microsoft Office, e-mail clients, web browsers and database applications) and research (i.e. ArcGIS, JMP, Matlab) functions. Determines appropriate contacts and coordinates with others as required to install and configure software required to access campus resources such as purchasing, personnel and financial systems. Coordinates with vendors as required to resolve problems with applications.
  • 10% Network Support - Monitors building communications closets to ensure that they are well maintained and that there is adequate capacity for future connections. Performs network infrastructure upgrades and renovations as needed.
  • 5% Administrative Reporting - Maintains complete, accurate and timely documentation of work in task management system in keeping with group guidelines. Ensures that users are well informed of the status of their requests for assistance during the resolution process. Develops and maintains desk manual detailing key information relating to job process. Develops and maintains web based documentation to assist users with common tasks and issues.
  • 5% General Support - Other duties as assigned.
