BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: Job will focus primarily on State Forest management. Specific tasks may include the following:
- Gather certain field data from random plots using hand-held GPS unit and/or electronic data collector, 10 BAF prism, clinometer, tree scale stick, and other related equipment, using standard procedures
- Input field data into the State Forest inventory program
- Gather field data with hand-held GPS unit and/or electronic data collector
- Assist with timber type mapping using GIS technology
- Assist foresters in marking forest product sales based upon a written prescription
- Perform timber volume computations
- Monitor sales activity for compliance with contract requirements
Essential skills include:
- Tree identification
- Tree diameter and height measurement
- GPS navigation
- GIS data manipulation
- Candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license at the time of appointment or demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the job.
Job Requirements:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: On or before the date of appointment, the preferred candidate must possess the following:
1. 30 semester college credit hours, including or supplemented by 12 semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: forest biology, silviculture, forest mensuration, forest protection, forest soils, dendrology, botany and land surveying.
OR
2. One year of diversified, technical forestry experience in two or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products, nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.
Operational Needs: Normal workdays will be Monday through Friday year-round; some nights and weekends and overnight travel may be required. This position will require office and field assignments based on program needs. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work independently or as part of a team with minimal supervision in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Must possess a valid driver's license and demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
