THE JUVENILE TREATMENT CENTER
The Juvenile Treatment Center (JTC), built in 2004, is a Juvenile Detention Facility constructed to provide secure detention for up to 40 minors. The facility is located in the County of El Dorado Government Center in the city of South Lake Tahoe. The JTC serves the juvenile detention needs of the Probation Department, Superior Court, and law enforcement agencies located in the South Lake Tahoe region of El Dorado County. The primary purpose of the JTC is to provide secure detention for minors coming under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court. Although the primary purpose is to provide secure detention, the JTC provides activities and guidance to contribute to each minor’s social and personal development to enhance his/her ability to function acceptably in the community.
THE OPPORTUNITY
THE OPPORTUNITY
Bring your passion for correctional programs to the Probation Department and have the opportunity to ensure the safety and security of juvenile detainees. You will have the opportunity to counsel juveniles and their families and assist in developing treatment plans including behavior modification goals. You will have the opportunity to conduct or assist in group sessions to provide supportive counseling and self-help education.
The selected candidate will have the opportunity to:
- Oversee and monitor the safety, security, treatment, recreation, personal hygiene, and other daily living activities of juveniles detained at a County Juvenile Facility.
- Supervise and direct juveniles in a variety of activities such as personal hygiene, recreation, and the cleaning of room and bathroom areas.
- Monitor and enforce hall rules and safety and security measures; search juveniles for contraband.
- Perform intake duties such as receiving, recording, and securing valuables; assigning rooms and orienting new detainees to a County Juvenile Facility; complete and process paperwork for the admission, care, and release of juveniles and provide information on their legal rights; may conduct alcohol/drug testing as assigned.
Deputy Probation Officer I - Institutions:
Education:
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate.
Deputy Probation Officer II - Institutions:
Equivalent to possession of an Associate of Arts degree or completion of sixty (60) college-level semester units,

Experience:
One (1) year of experience counseling and overseeing juveniles in a detention facility at a level equivalent to the County's class of Deputy Probation Officer I – Institutions, including successful completion of the probationary period and required Juvenile Corrections Officer CORE training, 832 PC training, and CPR/First Aid training. Additional experience equivalent to the County's class of Deputy Probation Officer I – Institutions, beyond the one (1) year of required experience, may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS
The Human Resources Department will screen all applications to identify qualified candidates. After screening, qualified candidates will be referred to the next step and notified of all further procedures applicable to their status in the recruitment process.
Pre-Employment Background Questionnaire (Pass/Fail): Those candidates that meet the minimum qualification review will be asked to complete a Pre-Employment Background Questionnaire and be required to submit that questionnaire within the required 3-day timeframe. Those candidates that pass this screening will be invited to participate in the written exam.
Written Examination (Weighted 100%): A written examination consists of questions developed to test a candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities for a particular job. Most written exams administered by the County are in 'booklet' format and the candidate records their answer on a bubble-in style answer sheet. Examples of what is typically included in a written examination include vocabulary, grammar, spelling, mathematics, and analytical reasoning. Only the candidates that receive passing scores will be placed on the eligibility list.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This recruitment will establish a list for the purpose of filling current and future full time, part time and extra help vacancies throughout the county for up to three months.
It will also establish a list of qualified female candidates to maintain staffing levels pursuant to Penal Code Sections 4021 and 4030.

Ten (10) extra help vacancies in the Probation Department, Juvenile Treatment Center, located in South Lake Tahoe, CA.
Extra help vacancies are made to maintain adequate coverage of work for short periods of time at frequent intervals, where employment is of a recurrent nature depending on the needs of the Agency; work may be seasonal, on-call, and/or for a limited duration. This extra help position may transition to a regular full-time employee if the conditions of Personnel Rule 1103.1 (Download PDF reader) exist.
