Dental Assistants at Dental Oncology department perform supportive procedures in the clinical treatment of patients and/or the training of dental residents and students and perform other duties as assigned. Incumbents perform complex and technical procedures such as mouth-mirror inspections of oral cavity to include charting of lesions, restorations and missing teeth; and place and remove temporary/sedative dental restorations. The Registered Dental Assistant (RDA)/Dental Assistant(DA) assists faculty and residents in the care and treatment of patients. The RDA supports dental care delivery by preparing treatment room, patient, instruments, and materials; passing instruments and materials; and performing procedures as outlined by the State of California Dental Board permissible duties for registered dental assistants and under the direction of a dentist.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • One year of Dental Assisting experience in a dental practice.
  • Familiarity with infection control policies and procedures; Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Knowledge of high clinical standards in dental assisting practices and the demonstrated ability to implement these standards. Ability to understand patients' needs and the knowledge to meet those needs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of maintenance and operation of dental equipment and instruments.
  • Sensitivity to patients' cultural backgrounds; and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent multitasking and organization skills with ability to follow through to complete tasks.
  • Demonstrated excellence in reliability and attendance.
