Summary:

Reporting to the Lead Custodian, and working under general supervision, the Custodian is responsible for maintaining an attractive, sanitary, and safe facility for staff and the public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings and events; and minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure. This is an Essential Personnel position in the Department of General Services.

Essential Functions of the Position:

Cleans assigned facilities for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment to include but not limited to the following:

  • Cleans offices, meeting rooms, kitchens, etc.
  • Mops floors
  • Vacuums all carpeted areas
  • Dust all furniture and fixtures as required
  • Washes and disinfects all restroom floors, walls, toilets, partitions and fixtures
  • Cleans mirrors and windows
  • Replenishes toilet tissue and soap as needed
  • Empties all waste baskets and garbage cans
  • Places garbage in outside trash dumpster
  • Cleans entrance and exits including glass, doors and hardware
  • Keeps outside entrances, sidewalks and parking lots clear of snow, trash and debris.
  • Cleans, washes, and disinfects drinking fountains
  • Cleans kitchen sinks and countertops
  • Washes and buffs floors with floor polisher
  • Spot cleans walls and toilet partitions
  • Reports required maintenance repairs
  • Reports damages and acts of vandalism
  • Unlocks and secures buildings as required
  • Ensures cleaning materials and supplies are stored in safe and orderly manner
  • Maintains an adequate supply of cleaning materials and supplies
  • Restocks materials and supplies.
  • Performs routine grounds keeping duties (e.g. picking up paper and other refuse and debris on grounds, and sweeping walks and entrances) for the purpose of maintaining grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
  • Opens and/or secures facilities (e.g. opening building access doors, opening gates, turning off lights, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational and safe for occupancy and/or minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to the County.
  • Communicates issues about safety and/or items requiring maintenance to supervisor for the purpose of providing information, obtaining repairs, ensuring safety, and/or scheduling special cleaning.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.
  • Arranges equipment or furnishings (e.g. desks, tables, chairs, etc.) for the purpose of providing adequate arrangements for meetings, and special events.
  • Required to assist in snow removal for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment.
  • Attends service training when required (e.g. blood borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.) for the purpose of receiving information on new and/or improved procedures.

Additional Functions:

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Lead Custodian or the Director of General Services.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of commercial cleaning and sanitizing procedures, chemicals, products, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products.
  • Ability to operate commercial cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, carpet cleaners, etc.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, County employees and the general public.
  • Ability to complete OSHA/Safety training as required.
  • Ability to be flexible in responding to changes in schedules and job priorities.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to understand and prioritize work plans to complete assignments with quality work and in a timely manner.
  • Ability to acquire additional skills to maintain technical competencies.
  • Ability to present a professional, positive and helpful attitude at all times when interacting with County employees, co-workers and the general public. Exhibits an understanding of Human Relations and functions as a “team player.”
  • Ability to observe maintenance needs requiring attention and report those to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of professional and confidentiality.

Education, Experience and Training:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalency; and
  • Two years of verifiable commercial custodial experience to include experience with commercial cleaning equipment (e.g. floor polishers, carpet cleaners, etc.) OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities

Working Conditions:

  • Environmental: The regular workweek is Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. with a thirty-minute lunch break. This position will require a flexible schedule to accommodate the business needs of the department and the County, to include evening, weekend and occasional holiday hours.
  • Physical Effort: Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform the physical demands of the job to include significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, frequent stooping, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 50% walking, and 50% standing. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone and/or radio. Any employee may be required to stay at or return to work during public health incidents and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency. Must be available for regular standby assignments and work scheduled for regular standby assignments; for work scheduled off-hours; for emergency overtime as required.
  • Hazards: Employee is subject to both inside and outside conditions: activities occur inside and outside in approximately equal amounts. Adverse Working Conditions/Environmental Hazards include: Exposure to cleaning solutions and chemicals. Exposure to blood borne pathogens, saliva and other bodily fluids. Exposure to inclement weather occasionally.

Special Conditions or Requirements:

  • Must be willing to submit to a criminal background and Motor Vehicles check.
  • Must consent to drug testing consistent with Louisa County’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must maintain a driving record consistent with insurance industry standards in order to drive a County vehicle.
  • Twelve (12) month probationary period.
