Job Description
The Crime Scene Investigations Section is a Unit that is responsible for providing forensic assistance to the Criminal Investigations Division with the collection, processing, and preservation of collected evidence from various crime scenes within Gwinnett County. The Crime Scene Investigations Section is equipped with personnel that can respond and process crime scenes ranging from stolen vehicles to complex death scenes. Crime Scene Specialists are trained in various specializations to include latent print examination, footwear and tread pattern analysis, ballistic analysis, and marijuana examinations.
The Crime Scene Specialist I position is the first level of the Crime Scene series. Incumbents are trained on the job to become Crime Scene Specialist II's. This position is responsible for providing assistance in the collection and processing of evidence at crime scenes, and in a laboratory environment
Essential Duties
  • Operates the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) system daily.
  • Trains and assists in the processing of crime scenes which includes: interviewing officers, witnesses, and victims, taking photographs, sketching scenes, locating and processing physical evidence, producing cast impressions of shoeprints and tire tracks, and other applicable duties.
  • Trains and assists in processing evidence for fingerprints with powders and chemicals, identifies biological substances, such as blood, and utilizes specialized equipment.
  • Trains and assists in developing and printing film and digital media.
  • Trains and assists in fingerprinting victims and suspect(s) and maintains applicable documents and materials.
  • Trains on computer systems to prepare photo line-ups and detailed reports of crime scene investigations and lab findings.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Answers and routes phone calls and provides assistance when applicable.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Grade
The grade for this position is B21(3).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job;
  • Valid Driver's License from state of residency
  • Must complete coursework required to obtain P.O.S.T. certification as an Identification Technician at Department's discretion
Other Job Requirements/Information
  • This position may require: 24 hour on call assignment, overtime, or working weekends, holidays, 10-hour, 12-hour, and rotating shifts.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts, M – F, and On-Call status during weekends and holidays. 5% differential for 3-11 & 11-7 shifts, and/or on-call pay.
  • This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing.
  • This job requires a public safety background check to include motor vehicle histories, criminal histories, and finger printing.
