POSITION: Crew Boss
SALARY: $20.62 - 23.90 / HR DOE
REPORTS TO: Operations Technician Senior/Operations Specialist
LOCATION: Mount Tolman Fire Center, Keller, WA
Basic Functions: Supervisory level position with overall responsibility for a crew of up to 20 people assigned to work on fuels management projects and fire suppression. Employees at this level provide overall on site supervision and leadership of the crew. The crew boss plans and directs the work, allocates resources, communicates and coordinates needs for vehicles, supplies and equipment with the fuels specialist; identifies and mitigates job hazards, conducts safety meetings; monitors work quality and quantity; sets standards and evaluates work of subordinates; sets and adjusts short term priorities; ensures maintenance of the crew fleet by coordinating repairs and scheduling maintenance; finds ways to improve production and increase quality of work; gives advice and instruction to employees on work and administrative matters; hears and resolves minor complaints from employees; resolves problems encountered; and reports to supervisor about the work, personnel, and problems encountered; identifies and provides for training needs., documents project costs, reports work progress and project accomplishment; manages assigned property by maintaining and repairing tools and equipment to meet individual crew needs; ensures personnel meet fire readiness standards on a daily basis; effects discipline measures; documents and reports crew time; ensures health, safety, conduct of crew members; instructs and directs crew in wildfire fighting and prescribed burning operations. During periods of crew layoff assists Fire Management Staff with basic project planning, data gathering and layout
Education and Training:
- Requires a High School diploma or GED
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain prior to hire, a valid State Driver’s License. In addition, employee must be insurable under the Tribe’s licensing requirements.
- Must qualify for a U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operator’s Identification Card
- Must pass the required Arduous firefighter medical examination needed to take the arduous pack test.
- Must take a Pack Test, and pass with an Arduous Rating.
- Must continuously meet the requirements for a National Interagency Fire Qualifications System (NIFQS) rating of firefighter.
- Must be available to work as needed beyond a 40-hour workweek including weekend, holidays, and extended hours on weekdays.
- Must be able to perform moderate to heavy physical tasks in the outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Must have completed the following classes S-131, ICS-200, S211, S-212, S-230, S-290, First Aid and CPR, L-280.
- Must have a minimum of 4 seasons work experience in fire suppression and fire management (each season includes the summer months June, July, August and September)
- Must be red card qualified as an FFT1.
- Must be red card qualified as an ICT5
- Must be red card qualified as an CRWB
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires Knowledge of general fire, fuels, forestry and range work in order to personally perform and lead others in the performance of a variety of work in such areas as wildland urban interface treatments, hazard fuel reduction, hazard tree removal, prescribed burning, as well as vehicle and equipment maintenance and up keep.
- Knowledge of related fields such as forestry, range, wildlife, botany, soils, water, cultural and historical resources in order to make informed operational decisions.
- Knowledge of wildland fire management planning, strategies, tactics and suppression methods used in the containment and control of wildfires and wildland fires in order to relay assignments to crew members, accurately evaluate rapidly changing fire circumstances, determine when/if additional forces may be needed, or determine when circumstances warrant withdrawal of crew to safe location.
- Knowledge of fire behavior including causes of fire, influences of temperature, humidity, wind, topography, slope, and fuel moisture conditions, and fuels in order to know where to attack the fire, build fire line and where to be positioned to manage a wildland fire.
- Detailed knowledge of the methods and procedures associated with wildland fire suppression and management to resolve a full range of irregular or problem situations when suppressing wildland fire.
- Certification of a type 5 Incident Commander is required.
- Specific technical firefighting knowledge such as, but not limited to hand crew, pump, engine and/or helicopter operations to enable the incumbent to function in assigned capacities and to instruct or lead others in those duties if necessary.
- Specialized knowledge and necessary certification in areas of falling, saw repair, pump operation and water handling. Ability to operate pumps taking into consideration effect of friction loss, pressure, pumping mechanisms, hose thread and apparatus differences, and operating procedures to lay hose and to operate equipment for peak utilization.
- Knowledge of tactical methods and techniques for use of water and additives in controlling and mopping up fires in order to efficiently and effectively accomplish operations where water is in short supply.
- Skill in the use of hand tools such as Pulaski, shovel, and McLeod; and power tools including chain saw, trimmer, pole pruner, and portable pumps to build fireline and control wildland fire and to perform the nonfire related duties.
- Knowledge of fire and fuels terminology to communicate with other crewmembers and oral and written communication skills sufficient to effectively interact with people at all levels, internal and external to the organization, including the public.
- Ability to lead a crew and to provide on-the-job training in proper and safe techniques, applications, methods, procedures and principles. This ability is used to effectively deal with a wide variety of conditions and situations encountered during wildfire suppression actions, prescribed burning, and fuels management project work.
- Knowledge of work procedures and practices in working with helicopters and aircraft.
- Knowledge of agency and inter-agency qualifications, potion task book requirements, and certification standards and procedures adopted by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group.
- Ability to perform basic computer technology skills such as word processing, database management, GPS.
- Knowledge and skill of standard first aid procedures sufficient to perform preliminary first aid triage as necessary.
Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
