DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The Corrections Teacher teaches all academic, vocational, and program classes in a correctional facility. This professional prepares lesson plans, evaluates the success of programs and the progress of students, and selects academic, vocational, and program courses. This position works with other corrections professionals to select courses and programs that best meet an inmate’s education plan.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Plan with the Corrections Education Administrator curriculum for alternative education, vocational and life skills programs.
· Coordinate with local education programs as needed to provide continuous and appropriate student academic and vocational programs.
· Develop and/or implement Individual Education Plans for residents/inmates each quarter they are detained.
· Supervise teacher assistants in areas of academic and vocational programs and assist in the implementation of all individual education plans.
· Provide individualized classroom instruction to multi-level residents/inmates in a team teaching setting.
· Provide leadership in design of curriculum, instruction and assessment in compliance with the Academic Standards from the Arizona Department of Education.
· Participate in the collection of data to maintain complete and up to date records of student work.
· Demonstrate initiative in professional improvement through participation in continuing education and training opportunities.
· Provide and arrange for adult/juvenile inmate testing to determine educational performance to establish academic levels in math and reading.
· Attend staff meetings and confer with supervisor; present and resolve difficult problems or questions; discuss plans of action when making decisions.
· Inspects premises for contraband, such as weapons or illegal drugs; and controls all classroom materials and equipment, which may be used as potential weapons.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:
· Knowledge of the history and traditions of the people of Gila River Indian Community.
· Knowledge of all necessary subject matter (Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Agriculture, Computer Science and GED studies).
· Possess the ability to teach in a correctional setting and interact with an adult/juvenile incarcerated population with possible medical, psychosocial, or educational deficits.
· Knowledge of modern education theory and practices as it pertains to (reluctant learners) detained adult/juvenile inmates.
· Ability to effectively plan, supervise and coordinate work of others.
· Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
· Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
· Ability to organize conduct effective classroom instruction and to motivate reluctant learners.
· Ability to provide individualized instruction at a variety of achievement levels.
· Ability to maintain strict standards of confidentiality.
· Ability to work with all staff in the organization to provide delivery of curriculum to all detained adult/juvenile inmates.
· Must acknowledge and agree to maintain a Drug-Free Workplace as a condition of employment with the Gila River Indian Community.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education or closely related field and two (2) years teaching experience, which includes one (1) year supervisory experience. Teaching experience in a detention/corrections facility preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Current State of Arizona teaching certification for elementary, middle and/or secondary (GED and/or Adult) or must obtain within (24) twenty-four months from date of hire.
- G.E.D. Proctor Certificate or must obtain within twelve (12) months from date of hire.
- Must pass a TB skin test and physical examination prior to date of hire.
- Required to pass a background check and fingerprint clearance as a condition of employment and must continue to maintain throughout duration of employment.
- Background checks are required for positions that involve regular contact with or control over Community Children in accordance with_ The Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, 25 U.S.C. Sections 3201 through 3210 and C.F.R. Part 63 _and positions that have regular contact with the Elderly.
- Tribal Operator’s Permit can be required.
- Required mandatory reporter pursuant to Title 7, Chapter 2 (7.205), B.
- Required to attend Title 7 Mandatory Reporting training on a yearly basis.
