The Renville County Sheriff's Office is looking to fill a full-time FEMALE Corrections Officer position.
The Corrections Officer with the Renville County Sheriff's Department is required to personally interact and manage inmates, maintain an orderly and secure jail and ensure compliance by inmates with established rules and regulations. This position is directly supervised by the Jail Administrator and Assistant Jail Administrator. In the absence of immediate supervision, one must rely on independent judgment, training and policy/procedure to perform all duties necessary for day to day functions and in emergency situations. There is risk of injury up to and including death. Physical interaction, possibly violent, with inmates may occur. Hazards such as inmates becoming combative or abusive, as well as unsanitary conditions and exposure to infectious diseases are possible.
Position is covered by the LELS - Jail Union Group.
- Set up recording in pre-booking area for new arrests and assist arresting officers with pre-booking process in LETG program.
- Perform booking process for incoming inmates.
- Knowledge of differing booking processes on new arrests, warrant arrests, sentenced and boarder inmates.
- Execute proper levels of inmate searches for safety and security of jail.
- Operate fingerprint machine for criminal and civil prints that are acceptable for BCA and FBI standards.
- Notify court, prosecuting attorneys and probation of new arrest. Send Hit Confirmations to other agencies via PsPortals notifying them of an inmate in our facility with a warrant.
- Understanding of the 36/48 hour rule for arrests and when to notify county attorney of arrest needing the extension of time/detainer.
- Assist new arrests with required court paperwork.
- Booking process of juvenile arrests per DOC guidelines of sight/sound separation.
- Answer and transfer all calls coming into booking in a professional and courteous manner.
- Create and maintain a confidential office environment, utilizing tact, courtesy and good judgment.
- Collect U/A's, PBT and Drug Sweat patches for requesting agencies/departments.
- Knowledge of data privacy issues and information that can and cannot be released to outside agencies.
- Operate inmate phone system with ability to block phone numbers, monitor inmate conversations, disable phones and enter free phone numbers for attorneys.
- Ordering of jail supplies and canteen items.
- Monitor incoming and outgoing inmate mail for contraband.
- Operate language line to assist with non-English speaking inmates.
- Supervise inmates with mandatory 30 minute cell/pod well-being checks, formal counts and 15 minute well-being checks for special management inmates. Talk to inmates who are struggling emotionally to avoid inmate issues later.
- Maintain post log including well-being checks, inmate movement, meal delivery, laundry exchange, volunteer and professional visits and any other activity in the facility.
- Daily cell searches for contraband.
- Daily cleaning of facility including kitchen area.
- Supervise inmate cleaning of personal cells and dayrooms.
- Supervise inmate workers during cleaning, laundry exchange and squad washes and record times worked on inmate paperwork for court credit toward fines.
- Prepare reports of inmate violations and enforce inmate discipline when necessary.
- Knowledge of and ability to use restraint chair when necessary for when medical or safety issues arise with an inmate.
- Proper and necessary use of force when needed to ensure safety and security of staff and inmates.
- Ensures the continued maintenance of safety equipment such as Tasers, hand-cuffs, leg irons, radios, Stun Cuff's and restraint chair.
- Collect and respond to requests from inmates.
- Medication delivery including set up and proper documentation on Medical Administration Record.
- Respond to inmate medical problems emergencies and notify physician after direction from medical protocol.
- Knowledge of medical protocols from MEnD Correctional Health Care and when to use.
- Intake of medication from incoming inmate or pharmacy including documentation on inmate Medical Administration Record.
- Understanding of when an inmate meets mental health criteria and needs to be referred to jail psychologist.
- Release and receive work release inmates.
- Intake and documentation of all money transactions for inmates including bail.
- Transports of inmates to court, including area boarders and Bureau of Prisons.
- Daily laundry exchange, daily washing and drying of laundry and set up of inmates clothing.
- Launder incoming inmate clothing to prevent odor in property room.
- Receive food and jail supplies shipments and unpack items, entering into computer inventory programs to ensure accountability of supplies.
- Process inmate canteen orders, including setting up and distributing.
- Proper communication with other counties, probation, attorneys, court, Human Services, Public Health, Police Departments.
- Ability to understand Release Orders, Sentencing Orders and warrants.
- Attend seminars, training, conferences relating to specific job duties, as required by Statue, Department of Corrects Standards, and MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) or at the direction of the Sheriff or Jail Administrator.
- Ability to work a rotating schedule which includes days, afternoons, nights, weekends, holidays, some shifts with minimal notice and extended shifts due to weather or other emergencies.
- Ability to prioritize tasks by matter of importance and remain calm in all situations.
- Testify in court as required.
- Act as a Training Officer to all newly hired Corrections Officers.
Two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid MN Driver's license.
