Job Description:

Are you looking for a new position managing a brand-new state-of-the-art biological and health research laboratory? Do you have experience managing a lab and overseeing fee-for-service and budgets?

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a new position as a Core Lab Manager for our new state-of-the-art faculty and researcher laboratory. This position will have oversight of the laboratory security, equipment, training, and maintenance of the equipment housed in the CVM Core Laboratory.

The employee will have primary responsibility for developing standard operating procedures for each piece of equipment, training equipment users in the standard operating procedures, supervising users to assure adherence to protocols, managing lab operations and budget (including the development of fee-for-service accounts), and communications with users. Secondary responsibilities will include laboratory support for some other smaller laboratories hosted by the CVM and assisting the Office of Research and Graduate Studies with research support activities.

The primary site of work is the College of Veterinary Medicine Core Laboratory, however, up to 25% of the time could occur in laboratories located at the ISU Research Park (Ames) and supported by the College of Veterinary Medicine.


Example of Duties
  • Evaluates, purchases, and maintains equipment and supplies for a lab program.
  • Manages the operation and maintenance of lab equipment.
  • Sets up labs to accommodate graduate student and faculty equipment use
  • Administers safety protocols.
  • Instructs equipment users in the proper use of the equipment and standard operating procedures.
  • Develops training modules as necessary for equipment
  • Maintains and develops budget including fee-for-service pricing structure and accounts
  • Identifies and purchases necessary materials for equipment operations.
  • Instructs, trains, and evaluates staff, graduate assistants, and student workers.

• Assist with research support activities including organizing and hosting technical training by field specialists, assisting with research needs assessment in college, and assisting with research summaries.


Level Guidelines
  • Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals
  • Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude
  • Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action
  • Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issues and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices
  • Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff
  • May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)
  • May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
  • Provides guidance to students
