The University of Virginia is a highly competitive Division I program committed to academic and athletic excellence. The Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for the position of Coordinator of Student Development to support student-athletes in various sport programs.

Student development work at UVA is intended to engage students around their interests and goals through advising, connection with opportunities, and designing customized, high-impact experiences. The Coordinator of Student Development will collaborate with other academic and student development staff to execute a comprehensive program dedicated to the holistic engagement and growth of student-athletes through both individualized and programmatic initiatives, with a significant emphasis on career readiness. Other key initiatives include a multi-year Leadership Academy, and robust community engagement and personal development programs. Strategic alignment of unit goals will be developed in coordination with the Associate Athletics Director for Academics and Student Development.

Responsibilities include:

  • Counsel, coach, and advise student-athletes at all stages of career development, including, but not limited to, academic major and career choices, identifying and securing internships and externships, understanding print and online career resources, and networking and job search strategies.

  • Organize career readiness events and activities designed to engage student-athletes in self-assessment, professional development, networking, and employment opportunities.

  • Participate in national and local discussions on career readiness best practices and emerging trends. Participate in professional development opportunities to maintain professional competency in career development practices.

  • Design and implement initiatives, according to best practice, student needs, and emerging trends to effectively engage student-athletes in the areas of community and civic engagement, leadership and development personal development.

  • In collaboration with other professional staff, support SAAC and other student-athlete leadership groups.

  • Maintain detailed records of all activities, events, and participants for reporting and evaluation purposes within the department’s internal student development database.

  • Craft communications, using a variety of tools, to effectively deliver timely information to student-athlete population.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of a wide-range of career planning and student development strategies.

  • Proven effectiveness advising students and an understanding of the unique experiences of student-athletes.

  • Proven commitment to principles and practices that enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Experience designing and implementing high-impact programs.

  • Proven accountability for results through reporting, program assessment, and effective communication.

  • Experience with, or ability and interest to learn, delivering and interpreting personal growth.

  • Assessments (i.e., DiSC, Strong Interest Inventory, Strengths, etc.).

The successful candidate will pass a background check.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $45,000 - $48,500, dependent upon qualifications.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree.

Experience: At least two years of experience working with college students or graduates with regard to: career planning, counseling, advising, teaching, student affairs, or a related field is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Master's Degree in higher education, counseling, or a related field is strongly preferred.

Experience: Two or more years of related experience; prior experience working with Division I student-athletes; prior experience working in student-athlete development at a Power 5 institution.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities : Knowledge of NCAA, ACC, and University rules and regulations.
