Summary:
Since its inception in 1996, the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Engineering has brought innovative, real-world engineering education to Central Virginia. Comprising five different departments, the College of Engineering enrolls more than 1,900 undergraduate and 300 graduate students in several degree programs supported by approximately 530 full-time, part-time, and student employees. The College of Engineering is in search of a part time Content Writer/Storyteller.
This part-time role will contribute to VCU College of Engineering’s marketing and communications efforts by producing content and stories for the college’s website, social media, newsletters, advertising campaigns, press releases, media advisories, annual report/magazine and other electronic and printed publications. The successful candidate will learn the VCU College of Engineering brand and brand voice and infuse that into a wide range of materials.
Writing responsibilities include good storytelling abilities, using many different data sources. Superior writing and communication skills, particularly with editing to AP Style. The person in this role will conduct thorough research on industry-related topics to complement the content, interview students, faculty, and other stakeholders to deliver quality writing pieces that appeal to our audiences, attract prospective students and boost brand awareness. Ideal candidates will be able to create high-quality, original content, proof and self-edit, collaborate with larger teams, and keep the VCU brand consistent across all channels.
Minimum Qualifications:
This position requires an individual with:
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) preferably in English, mass communications, marketing or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.- Some years of relevant writing experience.
- Excellent writing, research and communication skills.
- Ability to handle multiple projects and prioritize deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently as well as a strong ability for teamwork and collaboration.
- A professional demeanor. Resourceful and solution-oriented. Creative ability.
- Comfortable interacting directly with clients and with various university audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Considerable years of relevant writing experience.
- Demonstrated experience writing for a variety of platforms and uses.
- Knowledge of marketing principles.
- Experience in higher education.
- Experience in writing content for digital marketing campaigns
Additional Information:
All candidates are required to submit a portfolio of 3 writing samples with their application.
Approximately 25 hours per week.
Salary Range: $22 - $26 per hour depending on experience
