Construction Inspector I / II Job at City of Suffolk
- Inspects construction projects and enforces project specifications governing minimum standards and requirements of roadway and associated infrastructure.
- Ensures that all construction means and methods are in accordance with local, state and federal requirements including compliance with the VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications, VDOT Road and Bridge Standards, VDOT LAP Guide, Virginia Work Area Protection Manual, MUTCD, DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control regulations, DEQ Stormwater regulations, and various other publications that govern the minimum standards and requirements associated with site development, storm water facility construction and construction, alteration, and repair of roadway and related infrastructure.
- Examines construction methods and materials and construction project location; ensuring compliance with City planning and development policy as well as state and federal requirements when applicable. Review and interpret project plans, revisions, and corresponding contract and construction documents.
- Confers with contractors, property owners, developers, architects, engineers, supervisor and others regarding inspection requests, construction codes, building plans, etc.; examines and investigates methods and practices employed in local construction projects, recommending changes when necessary.
- Tests, measures, and quantifies various construction materials to ensure adherence with applicable codes and standards.
- Oversees construction projects.
- Inspects construction projects for work zone safety, permitting, and that erosion and sediment control practices are being adhered to.
- Measures installed quantities of construction materials; calculates percent completion; adjusts construction drawings to reflect actual work; reviews construction contracts and oversees tests.
- Conducts final inspections on city and state right-of-way improvements for acceptance and maintenance of roadways.
- Prepares and/or reviews monthly estimates for capital projects.
- Prepares and maintains various records and reports pertaining to status of ongoing construction projects; schedules appointments; conducts final project inspection and recommends acceptance of work.
- Interprets site plans and construction plans for constructability and contract compliance.
- Attends construction meetings with contractors, engineers, and inspectors.
- Fuels vehicles; takes vehicles to shop for maintenance and repairs; maintains appearance and cleanliness of vehicle.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Must possess Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Certification, or obtain within 18 months of employment. Must possess Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Stormwater Inspector Certification, or obtain within 18 months of employment. May require various VDOT certifications depending on department assigned.
Salary range: $41,885 - $53,571
Construction Inspector II - Requires High School or GED, 5 years progressive experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities or any equivalent combination of progressive experience and technical training which provides the necessary knowledge and experience; OR an Associate's degree in Construction/Building Trades, Civil Engineering or closely related field and 4 years of journey level experience in the construction/building trades, building inspection or closely related work; OR a Bachelor's degree in Construction/Building Trades, Civil Engineering or closely related field and 2 years of journey level experience in the construction/building trades, building inspection or closely related work. Requires a valid driver's license.
Must possess or obtain within 12 months of hire, Virginia DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Certification, Stormwater Inspector Certification, and depending on the department assigned an Inspector Certification for Intermediate Work Zone Safety, VDOT Asphalt, VDOT/ACI Concrete, VDOT Soils and Aggregates, Troxler Nuclear Gauge Safety, and HazMat as well as attendance at Regional Construction Standards review class.
Salary range: $43,979 - $56,250

- Knowledge of local, state and federal highway construction standards.
- Ability to read and interpret highway construction drawings, diagrams and contract documents.

- Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape utilizing various measuring devices.
- Ability to determine grade/elevation utilizing basic survey equipment.
- Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office machinery and equipment; to operate motor vehicles.
- Ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
- Ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.
- Knowledge and proficiency with computers and related software programs.
- Maintains an acceptable driving record.
