Position Summary: Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Interlochen seeks a full-time choir conductor to build an inclusive choral program for students across Interlochen’s arts divisions. The Conductor of Choral Music will provide leadership and coordination for Interlochen choral programs for both Academy and Camp. The Conductor will lead both the Concert Choir and Chamber Choir and suggest the addition of new ensembles and choral programs for both Academy and Camp. The successful candidate should demonstrate knowledge of choral repertoire, rehearsal techniques, performance ability, and piano skills sufficient to run a rehearsal without assistance. Additionally, the Conductor will oversee administrative functions of the choirs. As well, the Conductor will maintain a private lesson studio and/or teach other classes in the Division, as appropriate. The Conductor of Choral Music also has the opportunity to teach for Interlochen Arts Camp in the summer under an additional contract if interested.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct the choir and chamber singers in rehearsals and performances
  • Develop new vocal ensembles as appropriate
  • Develop curriculum for choral activities to attract students to the Academy.
  • Promote repertoire selection that is diverse and inclusive and representative of the expansive nature of choral music throughout the world.
  • Create an exciting and challenging teaching and performing environment that fosters a successful learning atmosphere
  • Teach classes and private lessons as assigned
  • Recruit students in concert with enrollment staff.
  • Represent Interlochen in professional organizations and maintain and develop close ties with feeder programs, schools, and instructors, as well as with college and university programs to facilitate the success of our students as they move into higher education.
  • Seek the best use of materials, equipment and staff to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Comply with ICA policies/procedures and act as a good steward of ICA finances.
  • Respect the culture, diversity and rights of all students, their families and the community.
  • Prioritize duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Experience:

Education: *

  • Master's degree in choral conducting or Music education or equivalent professional experience.

Experience:

  • Significant professional conducting and performance experience
  • Significant experience in leading choirs singing various genres including jazz, pop, world, and contemporary music
  • Experience teaching vocal music in ensemble and private settings
  • Aptitude for embracing diversity in individuals, perspectives, musical styles, and curriculum
  • Strong managerial, administrative, and organizational skills
  • Ability to navigate in a complex educational setting, and build relationships
  • Strong proactive approach to solving problems
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Passion for music and the creative process

Physical Demands:
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 35lbs); to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation, and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
