Position Description

Job Summary: A concrete mixer truck driver delivers concrete and other cement-based mixtures to industrial, commercial and residential construction job sites.

A person with this job must be able to safely operate the truck and its auxiliary equipment such as levers, chutes and mixing drums. When she picks up the materials to be loaded into the mixer, the driver must be able to manipulate the drum under the hoppers that dispense the cement, gravel, sand and water into it. The driver must understand the mixing procedure and adjust the speeds on the mixer accordingly. The driver must know what materials should be in the blend and check the work order to ensure she is picking up the appropriate mixture.

Drivers are expected to follow all safety regulations for the operation of their vehicle both at the job site and at the delivery locations. Drivers are expected to do all they can to maintain the uncontaminated state of their product through the hauling process and delivery.

Drivers must possess any certification required by the State of South Carolina to operate these heavy vehicles. Drivers must also maintain a clean driving record.

Job Duties

  • Drive truck equipped with auxiliary concrete mixer to deliver concrete mix to job sites: Drives truck under loading hopper to receive sand, gravel, cement, and water and starts mixer.
  • Operate levers on truck to release concrete down truck chute into wheelbarrow or other conveying container or directly into area to be poured with concrete.
  • Clean truck after delivery to prevent concrete from hardening in mixer and on truck, using water hose and hoe.
  • Perform loading and unloading duties.
  • Perform daily inspections on the vehicle.
  • Maintain daily logs.
  • Understand/acknowledge the SC short haul regulations for Hours of Service of drivers within the 100 air mile radius. (12 hours per day, no more than 70 hours per 7 days, or 80 hours in 8 days. Must have minimum of 8 hours off between shifts. Drivers are allowed a one-time exception each week of up to 16 hours in one day. That day must be logged by a paper log book.)

Position Requirements

When discharging cement, stand in a position where you have a clear view of the chute and other workers in the area. Avoid maneuvering chute within a 6’ area of workers to prevent contact and possible injuries.

Ensure chute is properly secured in travel position before leaving the site to prevent damage while in transport.

Possible Hazards and Preventative PPE

  • Pinch points (rear discharge vehicles)—if you are attached the cement chute on the back of your mixer truck, beware of possible pinch points in the joints. Use gloves when necessary.
  • Debris – to avoid eye injuries wear safety glasses when outside of the truck. Splashing of cement, trash, or other debris may occur when washing out.
    • If you notice cement on your skin, remove any jewelry, protective gear, and concrete-soaked clothes. Brush any dry concrete off your skin and flush the burn with lukewarm water for about 20 minutes. If further medical attention is needed, contact your supervisor for direction of care closest to your location.
  • Long pants are required.

  • Generally dusty and dirty
  • Job sites are in various stages of construction and full of dirt, mud, gravel and construction equipment.
  • Driver must be strong and in good physical condition.
