Coastal Environmental Field Technician Job at Bay Environmental Consulting LLC
The Technician will conduct ecological field work at various sites under the supervision of lead scientists. The Technician will support field efforts, including marine fisheries and benthic sampling, shorebird monitoring, habitat assessments, environmental monitoring to support offshore wind energy projects, and wetland delineations. In addition to field work, the Technician will assist with data analysis, technical report preparation, and proposal submissions. Training will be provided.
This position will start off as seasonal, with potential for permanent employment.
Responsibilities
- Assist lead scientists with the collection of benthic samples and fisheries data from a marine vessel. This involves supporting team members with sorting and identifying fish, obtaining biometric data (e.g., length, weight), collecting benthic samples, and recording data.
- Conduct rare/threatened/endangered species monitoring for coastal species, including piping plovers, least terns, and sea beach amaranth.
-Perform environmental monitoring to support offshore wind energy projects.
-Assist lead scientists with performing natural resource surveys including wetland delineations, habitat assessments, and plant/wildlife inventories.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
· Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, or similar field.
· The Technician must be comfortable working all day (8 hours or more) on a boat in the ocean. The Technician will be required to work on a boat and will be responsible for various tasks onboard, which may include sorting fish, collecting benthic samples, and/or recording data.
· Willing and able to work in physically challenging outdoor situations in all types of weather.
· Ability to walk several miles to conduct field monitoring.
· Ability to follow instructions from the field lead and other team members. The Technician must be fluent in English.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Ability to act professionally and interact with other team members, including those from other companies and governmental agencies.
· The Technician must provide his/her own transportation by car to the project sites. The Technician may be expected to do overnight trips (travel expenses will be covered by BEC).
Preferred Experience
· Experience working on boats.
· Experience with shorebird monitoring, particularly piping plovers.
· Experience with fisheries and/or benthic sampling.
· Experience recording scientific data.
· Experience collecting water quality data.
· Experience with ecological data collection.
