JOB SUMMARY:

Clinical Administrative Supervisor (CAS) will report to the Director of Nursing. The CAS will have general oversight authority and has the primary responsibility of ensuring patient care/business continuity after-hours. The CAS serve primarily as a liaison between hospital administration and on-duty staff. Decisions may be made in collaboration with the Administrator on-call and/or a specific department head.

It is understood that the CAS is an extender of hospital administration and must act and operate accordingly. Strong management/leadership skills will be required. The CAS will rigorously promote the mission of vision of both NMMC and the Nursing Department.

DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY:

The NMMC administrative team has delegated the authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for the CAS to perform his/her duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervise hospital personnel to ensure that work is being done in accordance with regulations, policies/procedures, and infection control/safety practices.
  • Promotes effective communication through verbal communication, non-verbal communication, and through all correspondence.
  • Motivate and communicate in order to mold staff into cooperative teams and convey information continually up, down, and around the organization as to avoid communication “bottlenecks.”
  • Develop staff through nurturing employees, NMMC’s primary asset.
  • Practice performance management to include clarifying and setting expectations and goals, coaching, and monitoring employee’s work, addressing performance problems, providing feedback and recognition, coaching, developing, training, and doing performance appraisals.
  • Assist hospital leadership with the development and maintenance of high performing teams.
  • Actively promote the initiatives of hospital leadership.
  • Will be responsible for active self-development. This may include taking on assignments, developing initiatives, participating in training, seeking mentors, asking for feedback, and reading about management and leadership as to model continuous improvement.
  • Collaborates with staff to disseminate information, and to identify and correct problem areas, and/or to improve services.
  • Develops an ongoing understanding of departmental budgets to balance needs with fiscal responsibility.
  • Evaluates systems of patient care; implements/recommends changes as appropriate.
  • Is the point of contact for both administration and on-duty staff.
  • Makes administrative decisions as needed and will collaborate with the administrator on call and/or department head when necessary.
  • Monitors and reassigns staff on an ongoing basis to promote effective staff utilization.
  • Collaborates and assists the nursing office with communicating and solving staffing needs.
  • Assist nursing units to screen for appropriate placement of surgical and ambulatory care patients.
  • May participates in the decision to determine observation versus inpatient admission in the absence of utilization management.
  • Active member of the Rapid Response and Code 99 Team.
  • Will actively communicate sensitive matters to the Director of Nursing and appropriate department head, in a timely manner.
  • Promote positive outcomes by participating in quality improvement and being responsible for quality improvement auditing.
  • Perform such related duties not listed herein but deemed in the best interest of the department and NMMC.
  • Maintain fluency with computerized technology to include Microsoft applications, electronic medical records, and smart phone. Must be proficient in the use of the mobile phone/smart phone to include calling and texting and utilizing any essential applications.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

Graduate of an approved school of nursing and current RN license by Maine State Board of Nursing, BSN preferred.

Experience as a professional nurse in which potential administrative and supervisory competence has been demonstrated.

Keeps current with required certifications – CPR, ACLS, PALS, BTA, and NRP..

Compliant with continuing education requirements including live presentations and the rapid regulatory courses.

Maintains knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served, ie, neonate, child, adolescent, geriatric.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The duties as described will require frequent standing and walking.
  • The employee will frequently bend/stoop, squat, reach above the shoulders, twist and turn, kneel, and push/pull.
  • The employee will frequently be required to lift/pull/push/move up to 50 pounds.
  • May occasionally perform CPR, push equipment and carts, and frequently help to reposition patients in bed and/or transport patients.
  • Must utilize conversational speech for effective verbal communication.
  • Noise level is high in some areas. Must be able to hear equipment alarms, overhead pages, and direct verbal communication.
