Position Summary:

This position is to work on current research studies associated with the VCU Neuromuscular Medicine Division. The clinical trials (drug studies) are in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis (MG), and peripheral neuropathy space. We also have several additional studies in the natural history of ALS, natural history of primary lateral sclerosis (PLS), myasthenia gravis fatigue study, myasthenia gravis COVID study, and sarcoidosis-associated small fiber neuropathy study.

Key responsibilities of the research assistant will include:
  • Assist with participant recruitment, enrollment and retention
  • Scheduling and coordination of all visits
  • Acquiring and processing study data including questionnaires (to include patient reported outcome measures).
  • Documenting clinical assessments
  • Record keeping and data management to include data entry in the electronic data capture.
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance

Core Responsibilities:

15% - Study Participant Recruitment and Enrollment
Schedule follow up assessment/visits with participants; assure study visits and collections are done at appropriate time intervals. Recruits and consents study participants. Review clinical schedule for recruitment and follow-up appointments.

70% - Data Collection and Analysis, Database Management
Collect, review, and enter data into study databases. Researches and evaluates all documents for accuracy and completeness to ensure correct data is entered. Coordination of external data transfers and harmonization of multiple data sources.

15% - Research Visit Assistance
Prepare materials for study visits, including remote collection kits for participants. Collect questionnaires and bio-specimens from participants in clinic, and enter into the research records, as well as storing source documents into participants' study files. Ensures proper collection, processing, and shipment of specimens.


Minimum Hiring Standards:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Must be fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work professionally and efficiently with
    students, faculty, and patients/clinical research participants.
  • Candidates must complete mandatory competencies and certifications required by VCU and VCUHS such as the NIH Human Subject Protection training required by federal regulations for research.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field of study.
  • Prior research experience is preferred.
  • Ability to complete relevant CITI training. Prior experience with database management, research protocol development and IRB policy and procedures is preferred.
