Chief Operating Officer

Position Summary

As the Chief Operating Officer, you will coordinate and oversee the organizations daily operations. This includes all divisions of the company’s Operations, Maintenance, and Safety staff. You will review and manage performance metrics to deliver excellent customer service. You will maintain schedules and manage your team’s daily tasks to be sure we’re delivering efficient, safe, and courteous service to our customers while driving engagement of the front-line employees through clear leadership. You will also ensure a safe work environment through the safety director and safety staff by ensuring all safety guidelines and best practices have been implemented and followed by all members of the team. In addition, you will initiate best practices for productivity and resolve any route and service issues through effective communication. You will manage costs in accordance with the company’s budget while helping deliver value to all stakeholders of the company. You will work with the CFO and CEO to develop and implement company strategies, policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

To be successful as a Chief Operating Officer you will be expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Organizes and schedules all necessary resources required to accomplish activities.
  • Coordinates daily operational needs with Maintenance team.
  • Manages, through delegation to the division level managers, the end-of-day check-in process, capturing and communicating key service, safety, and equipment issues from local management team.
  • Give feedback on how the entire company functions to senior managers on a regular basis to ensure that company general activities flow on the same wavelength.
  • Reviews weekly demand / volume for routes, determines potential gains from re-routing, and recommends re-routes to the appropriate team member for execution.
  • Sets and monitors productivity, service, and safety targets for each division.
  • Assists with data collection and reporting required for incentive pay programs.
  • Works with functional groups to resolve employee relations and labor relations issues.
  • Acquires and coordinates workers with management to assigned locations.
  • Ensures that drivers comply with physicals, drug or alcohol tests, and training required by regulatory agencies.
  • Discipline local managers who go against company work ethics and retrench workers who tend to embark on procedures that are detrimental to company activities.
  • Visit customers and customer sites to evaluate and resolve safety issues, seeking service alternatives where appropriate.
  • Establishes and maintains a clean, safe work environment in compliance with Company/Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
  • Document problem fixes and provides instructions to team, should problems recur.
  • Communicates and follows-up on sales opportunities, problems at customer site, DVIR repairs, container swaps, and safety issues reported by drivers.
  • Coordinate, monitor, and manage various operating facilities within the company’s geographic footprint.
  • Improve company processes, policies, and practices to achieve company’s goals and ensure divisions adhere to company-wide rules and guidelines.
  • Help improve the efficiency of support services like communication channels and IT; and ensure free flowing communication amongst the divisions and facilities.
  • Work together with the CFO and CEO (serving as a link between them and the individual sites) to develop and implement new plans/ideas that will enhance the operations of the company at large.
  • Documents and maintains records required by regulatory agencies such as the Department of Transportation and Department of Environmental Quality/Department of Natural Resources.
  • Reviews and audits documentation related to route operations daily (e.g., DVIRs, driver time and attendance, open tickets), following up where appropriate.
  • Develops and Mentors leaders within the organization.
  • Hires, promotes, demotes, coaches, counsels, and provides guidance to a group of employees.
  • Drives collaboration amongst a diverse team to drive results.

Skills and Knowledge Requirements

  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience as well as experience in a senior leadership role.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements
  • Applicable experience may be substituted for education requirements.
  • Expertise, knowledge and understanding of DOT, Waste Management, Equipment and Safety.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must possess good organizational skills and the ability to work independently.

Performance

  • Attendance and punctuality according to the work schedule are a must and are vital to the operations of the rest of the company.
  • Full time hours, additional hours are regularly needed.

Physical Requirements

  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, tools etc.) most of the workday.
  • Required to exert physical effort in handling objects more than 40 pounds.
  • Occasional exposure to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc.)
  • Occasional exposure to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements.
