Serving as a key member of the organization’s senior leadership team, the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) leads and sets strategy for private philanthropy, public and private grant support, volunteer services, internal and external communications, public relations, marketing and board engagement. Working collaboratively with the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Programs Officer, Chief Medical Officer and other members of the senior leadership team, the CAO contribute to the strategic leadership and operational management of Father Joe’s Villages as a whole.

Essential Functions

  • Lead and oversee the execution of the organization’s efforts to raise $40+ million annually, including more than $24 million in public and private grant support, $15 million in private philanthropy and ongoing support for Turning the Key/Capital needs.
  • Lead, coach and mentor a team of 32 FTE team members including 3 direct reports, responsible for the organization’s public and private fundraising, internal and external communications and volunteer services.
  • Plan and evaluate financial needs and fundraising strategy to support the organization’s mission and Strategic Plan
  • Serve as a liaison to the Board of Directors and Board Development Committee, and support the CEO’s efforts to ensure board members are engaged and energized through their association with organization.
  • Work closely with CEO to deepen existing funder relationships and cultivate new supporters
  • Lead and oversee internal and external communication efforts including advertising, media relations, donor communication, employee communication and board relations.
  • Serve as an ambassador and spokesperson for the organization and articulate our mission to external constituents.
  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of Father Joe’s Villages program offerings and emerging trends in service delivery to identify growth opportunities and articulate need and impact to donors.
  • Work closely with Chief Programs Officer and programs staff to implement and advocate for new program models and best practices.
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with major donors, foundations, government and elected officials.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.
  • Minimum 10 years of management experience (including recruitment, training, performance management, counseling and retaining an engaged and accountable workforce) with demonstrated ability to foster strong sense of comradery and shared purpose within and between teams and to drive results.
  • Minimum 5 years in senior management preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years in fundraising experience. The ideal candidate will have experience both in solicitation of private donations and in obtaining awards from and contracting with governmental funders.
  • Strong strategic and creative thinker
  • Strong subject matter expertise in homeless policy and practice.
  • Experience working with elected and governmental officials and governmental agencies a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage public perception in light of key organizational decisions.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills. Must be a strong public presenter, even under adverse circumstances.
  • Intermediate user of MS Office.
  • Be at least 21 years of age with a minimum of 3 years of driving experience; possesses a valid

California driver's license; and has no Class 1 or more than two Class 2 violations within the past 36 months.

  • Participate in an annual Tuberculosis screening and/or other screenings when necessary.
