I. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, or designee, performs assigned surgical “scrub” duties and maintains sterile techniques for all surgical procedures.
  • Prepares the patient, operating room, equipment, and instruments for surgery, maintaining aseptic techniques. Provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
  • In addition to intraoperative duties, the Certified Surgical First Assistant performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations.

II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Essential: standing, lifting, walking, finger dexterity, seeing, hearing, speaking, static gripping of an object for prolonged periods, frequent gripping of an object.
  • Frequent standing, walking, and lifting.
  • Occasional periods of sustained effort involving lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds, assists with lifting and moving patients. Frequently lifts, positions, push and/or transfers patients, occasionally pushes/pulls or moves/lifts heavy equipment/supplies, frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling or crouching.
  • Operates Computer, Copier, Printer, Fax machine, multi-line telephone, PYXIS, Cows with scanner, Philips monitors, VS monitors, SCD devices, Constavac, Code Carts, Hovermat, Surgical beds, Steris Autoclaves, HD camera- video equipment and monitors, Orthopedic power equipment, Neptune, Electro-Surgical devices, Zimmer Tourniquet system, Novasure, Orthopedic positioning devices, Fracture and spine beds, microscopes, Depuy-Zimmer-Arthrex-Smith and Nephew-Synethes-Biomet orthopedic systems.

III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exposure to the risk of blood borne diseases, infectious and disease-bearing specimens; infectious and contagious diseases; hazards of handling diseased organs and tissue; odorous chemicals and gases; low level radiation; and bio- hazardous substances.
  • Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Performs emergency care.
  • Subject to interruptions and long irregular hours.
  • Required Personal Protective Equipment: Eye protection, gown, mask, mask with face shield, non-sterile/sterile medical gloves, CAPR.

IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Current certification as a first assistant (CFA), surgical assistant (CSA), or assistant in surgery by one the following:

o National Board of Surgical Technology and Assisting (NBSTSA)
o National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA)
o American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA)
o National Assistant at Surgery Council (NASC)

  • Current BLS/HCP certification.

B. EXPERIENCE:

  • Five (5) years experience as a Surgical Technologist in an acute care facility, or completion of accredited Surgical Technology program.
  • Previous First Assistant experience preferred.
  • Advance Specialty and resource skills required, preferably in 3 specialties areas.
  • Knowledge of AORN standards and standards related to particular surgical tech practice, anatomy, physiology, disease process, pharmacology, and aseptic techniques.
