JOB SUMMARY: The Ceramics Tech will coordinate support tasks with the Ceramics Teacher to ensure materials are available and ready for students according to class lesson plans. The Ceramics Tech will ensure safe loading and firing and unloading of material from kilns.


Essential Duties:

  • Safely load, fire & unload electric kilns: approximately 6 loads per week (depending on time in Semester)
  • Reclaim and pug clay: approximately 6 loads per week (depending on unit & need)
  • Cleaning of ceramics class, specifically: tables, sink drains, wheels as needed
  • Safely load, fire, and unload Skutt electric kilns with Kilnmaster.
  • Grind & wash kiln shelves (as needed)
  • Maintain organized Kiln Room, notify Ceramics Teacher of materials or supplies needed
  • Mix and reconstitute glazes
  • Monitor equipment for repairs: kilns, pug mill
  • Aide in 1-2 Raku firings within school hours
  • Meet with teacher once a week to coordinate tasks

Non-Essential Duties

  • Other special project duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Understanding of ^06 -^6 clay and firing processes (low-mid range).
  • Good understanding of Raku firing.
  • Able to use a Peter Pugmill.
  • Understanding of ceramic clay and glaze materials
  • Able to work as a support person with the instructor
  • Flexibility in schedule and a collaborative mindset
  • Be available for flexible kiln firing schedule. (Must be very available for the last two weeks of each semester, and able to fire three kilns back-to-back, roughly 16-20 firings in 2 weeks. Be prepared for quick turnaround, soaking times, and forced drying.)

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to relay and receive information via telephone and in person
  • Ability to work in a Ceramics Lab and school classroom setting which includes exposure to water and dust/dirt
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs repetitively for some tasks
  • Ability to bend at waist holding up to 20 lbs (kiln loading)
  • Ability to walk and move about the ceramics class and OES campus as needed
