The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) is the statewide professional association for physicians and medical students, supporting 25,000 members. We are currently seeking a Business Manager to support our Research and Publishing efforts. The world has changed, and so has the way we work. The MMS has adopted a flexible work model that allows most employees to choose where they work – at home, onsite in our Waltham or Boston office, or a combination of the two – based on their preferences and our business needs. The NEJM Group R&P Business Manager develops and manages the full budget cycle and monitors the overall fiscal performance for the NEJM Group R&P product lines as assigned. This position supports the Director of Business Planning & Analysis and General Manager(s) by ensuring that business strategy is informed by sound financial modeling and analysis and in-depth competitor tracking. She/He/They collaborates with key stakeholders to develop and recommend pricing strategies and structures. The Business Manager serves as the primary contact with Finance regarding budgets, forecasts and ongoing projections.
Responsibilities:
- Develops long range financial plans, annual budgets, forecasts and ongoing LRFP projections for the assigned product lines. Partners with revenue and cost centers to ensure the projections are realistic and accurate. Serves as the front line contact with Finance regarding these projections.
- Monitors financial performance, business drivers and market conditions for the assigned product lines. Identifies and reports on relevant trends and market developments to executive management team, and communicates reasons for material budget or forecast variances to General Manager(s) and Finance.
- Ensures adequate tools exist for understanding business drivers and for monitoring and projecting business activity and associated revenue and expenses for the product line. Works with revenue and cost centers to create, improve and, in some cases, maintain these tools.
- Develops analytical financial models as needed to evaluate new NEJM Group R&P product strategies, offerings and enhancements and to assess risk or opportunity within the product line associated with adjacent or related offerings in other areas of NEJM Group.
- Ensures best business practices are employed across the product lines to minimize operating expenses.
- Partners with revenue managers to analyze and recommend pricing rates and structures.
- Participates as a key stakeholder in the vendor bidding and vendor selection process for major contracts and expenditures that impact product line’s bottom line.
- Builds and maintains positive working relationships in all functional areas.
- Serves as project manager on special projects as needed.
Required Skills
Required Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in business administration, finance or related field plus 5 to 7 years in a business management or analyst role, preferably in a professional journal or publishing setting.
- Ability to demonstrate a strong leadership style and excel in a fast-paced and challenging, yet collaborative, work environment.
- Demonstrated aptitude for quantitative and qualitative analyses.
- Solid understanding of financial concepts, statements and financial analysis.
- Experience setting financial targets and monitoring performance.
- Project management skills and experience in managing projects with a number of stakeholders from different functional areas.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, proven ability to present work to executives.
