Compensation

The estimated pay for this position is $18.4415 to $22.6807. The rates shown include a 6% premium pay (base= $-$ plus 6%). This reflects only a portion of the total compensation package for this position. Additional compensation may be available for this role through differentials, incentives, and bonuses. In addition, this position may be eligible for participation and company contributions into the Kern County Employees’ Retirement Plan.

Job Description

Under direction, acts as lead Building Services Worker assumes responsibility for performing janitorial duties required to maintain an assigned facility in a clean and orderly condition; oversees Building Services and special program personnel.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is the advanced journey or lead level of the flexible classification series of Building Services Worker. Building Services Worker III's may function as a lead worker in a building services crew; oversee work release, community service and/or other special program personnel; and/or train subordinate personnel. Normal work assignments may be performed in close proximity to county employees and customers including patients in an acute hospital, as well as around sensitive, specialized equipment and infectious conditions and hazardous waste. Work may be performed within various locations in a pre-designated geographical location and/or during evenings, nights and weekends. This classification is distinguished from Senior Building Services Worker in that the latter classification functions as a first-line supervisor for a geographic area comprising several facilities.

Essential Functions:

  • Interacts with the public, patients, visitors and other staff in accordance with customer service standards;
  • Completes tasks with an attitude of teamwork and cooperation in accordance with department procedures and standards;
  • Uses precautionary and protective measures to avoid self-exposure and cross-contamination;
  • Handles and disposes of contaminated trash according to established procedures;
  • Maintains and respects patient and customer confidentiality;
  • Maintains buildings, equipment and supplies;
  • Acts in a lead capacity in assignments requiring two or more Building Services Worker;
  • Assigns work to other Building Services Workers or special program personnel;
  • Instructs others in the proper methods of care and maintenance of buildings;
  • Monitors inventory of all equipment;
  • Handles and disposes of contaminated trash according to established procedures;
  • Disinfects offices, workstations and public areas when an infectious condition has been reported;
  • Uses precautionary and protective measures to avoid self-exposure and cross-contamination;
  • Moves wheeled furniture racks; lifts folding chairs overhead; lifts and carries cases of supplies;
  • Utilizes various types of floor care equipment;
  • Assists in setting up, breaking down and moving folding tables; moves and arranges furniture and equipment;
  • Carries and erects folding ladders; climbs ladders.

Employment Standards:

One (1) year as a Building Services Worker II in the Kern County classification system or equivalent, or three (3) years of janitorial experience.

Candidates may be required to pass a thorough background investigation. Except for minor traffic violations, misdemeanor and felony convictions may be disqualifying.

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License is required.

Knowledge of:

The methods, materials and equipment used in building services work; basic math; basic bookkeeping practices required for inventory control purposes.

Ability to:

Communicate effectively with staff, co-workers and supervision about completed and pending tasks; work independently; follow written and oral instructions; use good body mechanics and follow basic safety practices in the performance of job duties; read and understand labels on containers and supplies; learn and use chemical applications in cleaning carpet, hard surfaces, Personal Protective ensemble, and other specialized cleaning procedures; select and safely use the proper chemicals and solutions required for a task; safely mix chemicals and solutions; instruct, motivate and lead others; maintain records for bookkeeping purposes; interact effectively with the public; prepare reports and complete forms; interact effectively with clients, county employees, patients, visitors, and hospital staff; perform duties in a customer service oriented manner; understand and comply with defined procedures which minimize the possibility of contamination; understand and comply with cleaning regulations imposed by external regulatory agencies; maintain and respect patient confidentiality.
