Taylor Shellfish Farms is one of the largest producers of farmed shellfish in North America. The company is quickly growing in sustainable shellfish farming with new techniques and innovative growing methods.
This position will be based out of the Bay Center, WA. Taylor Shellfish Co, Inc. facilities.
BAY CENTER BROODSTOCK POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Bay Center Broodstock Oyster Technician position will assist in caring for the oyster broodstock for commercial (ready to be used by the hatcheries) and research (Taylor Genetic Improvement Program) purposes. Learn and provide proper husbandry for the broodstock from seed to adults and help with supplying the hatcheries with broodstock for spawning. A crewmember is responsible for the equipment assigned to them, and be able to work day or night tides in all types of weather conditions. This means the crewmembers must wear appropriate protective clothing. Oyster crews are to report to their crew boss and/or manager for hours, places, and transportation. Oyster crews are often assigned to other tasks such as harvesting with other crews and must be open and available to work this position as well.
This position includes the following responsibilities: (these responsibilities will be much more detailed in our SOPs)
- Provide husbandry for the commercial broodstock - Following appropriate oyster growing techniques to insure optimal growth and survival.
- Provide assistance and labor during the major phases of the TGIP program - Bulk seed deployment in June-July, Test experiment replication in Sept-Oct, and Seed performance assessment in August (these dates are subject to change).
- Organize and take care of equipment off tide (cleaning of bags, tags, tools, boat equipment, etc.)
- Learn how to operate boom for lowing and raising gear from dock/boat.
- Communicate regularly with crew boss. This includes any issues on the farms or off tide.
- Be willing to assist other crews for harvesting.
Nursery – provide assistance during setting season.
- Assist with daily husbandry routines - Feeding, water exchange, monitoring of spat, monitoring of water quality, cleaning tanks, making of bags, loading and unloading.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Demonstrate reliability, attention to detail, flexibility, positive attitude, initiative, communication skills and enthusiasm
- Shellfish experience preferred
- Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate the tide and logistics schedule
- Be aware and knowledgeable of safety & ECOP rules and follow accordingly.
- Attend intra-company workshops and training for development of necessary operational skills: IT, data management, safety and heavy equipment training, First Aid, etc.
- Be comfortable operating boats and have a WA State boaters card
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to sit, stand and/or walk for up to 10 hours per day.
- The employee is required to be able stoop, bend, kneel, twist and squat.
- The employee needs to be able to lift up to 50lbs.
- The vision requirements include: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- Must be able to speak and hear well enough to communicate with co-workers.
- Must be able to use hands for repetitive simple grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation
- Must have agility and balance to safely climb on machines, boats, etc.
