Biological Assistant (Bats) Job at Student Conservation Association
The primary focus of the position will be to assist in bat monitoring and will also include assisting with natural resource projects, GIS & GPS inventory and mapping, literature review summaries of White-nose Syndrome (bats), and non-native plant removal.
Bat monitoring will include mist netting, acoustic field collection, acoustic file processing and telemetry tracking.
Additional resource project assistance will include cave monitoring (entrance vegetation, scat, invertebrates, Hobo™ climate data-loggers, water levels, and/or visitation), producing interpretive talks for park staff and the public, leading the Wildflower Phenology citizen science project with Inaturalist™ and report writing.
GIS & GPS inventory and mapping will include bat acoustics and telemetry mapping, invasive plants mapping, facility and trail condition assessments, and translating GIS data for databases and public information.
WNS literature review will include updating literature in park files, and continuing contributions to a book on WNS targeting youth. Additionally, the intern will search data in Oregon, Washington, and northern California in order to quantify various environmental and biologic factors that may influence white-nose syndrome (WNS) severity in those states.
Non-native plant removal will include hiking 1 to 4 miles per day removing exotic weeds with a Youth Conservation Crew and NPS employees, occasionally in a lead role.
The intern will also assist other ongoing projects as needed including: equipment maintenance, other GIS mapping, data processing, bird banding, cultural resources, trail maintenance, etc.
Compensation amounts:
- $650 - one time RT travel allowance
- $200 - weekly living allowance
- Housing on site available
- AmeriCorps eligible ($1,718 education award upon completion of your internship)
- All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes

- Location Description
Park housing is in a dorm or shared-house setting. Living at Oregon Caves is a social environment. Individual rooms are shared (usually) or private and have a twin bed, dresser, and closet space for each person. The intern will need to provide their own food, linens and all other personal items.Utilities, bathroom facilities, fully stocked kitchens (refrigerator, appliances, dishes), washer/dryer, limited wifi, and a house phone are provided and shared.
- Training Provided
This opportunity will provide training and opportunity in leadership. The intern will be expected to develop their skills to independently lead projects.
- Educational/Recreational Opportunities
The intern will be tutored in all areas described while working alongside NPS employees leading to working independently and mentoring others (volunteers and YCC). Recreational opportunities abound with hiking, the coast, wild rivers and redwoods nearby.
