Job Title: BioFuel Cell Researcher - Summer College Student (STEM)

Location: Monterey, CA ( Onsite )

Duration: 6+ Months Contract

Job Description:

  • The Department of Physics at the Naval Postgraduate School is seeking a Summer College Student to perform research on 3D-printable artificial muscles.
  • This position is specifically targeted towards a Summer College Student and is intended to be part of their academic credit requirements. The candidate will have the opportunity to gain technical and research experience while working on this project.
  • the ideal candidate for this position would be a college student with a background in a STEM field (such as physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering) who is seeking a summer research opportunity. They should have a strong interest in 3D printing, be familiar with experimental research techniques, and possess knowledge or experience in microfluidics and COMSOL simulations. Additionally, any previous experience with SolidWorks would be beneficial.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Optimized simulated geometries for gap-technique micro-capacitor-based artificial muscles.
  • Theoretical proof of principle for gap-technique showing increased output force density compared to traditional architecture.
  • The deliverables will be in the form of designs, figures, diagrams, COMSOL files, Excel data files, and SolidWorks files.

Education:

  • Education: A college education in a STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Math) field is required. This can include current students (junior or senior) working towards a Bachelor's degree, recently graduated students with a Bachelor's degree, or students in a combined Bachelor/Master program. The preferred STEM fields for this position are physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering.

Required Experience:

  • Experimental Research Experience: The candidate should have at least one year of experience in experimental research within a STEM field. This experience demonstrates the ability to conduct research, follow protocols, and work in a laboratory environment effectively.
  • 3D Printing Experience: The candidate should have at least one year of experience with 3D printing. This experience indicates familiarity with 3D printing technologies, processes, and troubleshooting.
  • Microfluidics Experience: The candidate should have at least one year of experience with microfluidics. Microfluidics is the science and technology of manipulating fluids at the micro meter scale, and experience in this area is essential for the research involving artificial muscles.
  • COMSOL Experience: The candidate should have at least one year of experience with COMSOL, which is a software platform used for multi physics simulations. Proficiency in COMSOL is necessary to conduct design, parameter sweeps, optimizations, and theoretical proof of principle using this simulation tool.
  • SolidWorks Experience: Experience with SolidWorks, a popular computer-aided design (CAD) software, is mentioned as a preferred skill. While not explicitly required, it would be beneficial for the candidate to have experience using SolidWorks for designing and modeling geometries.
  • Overall, the ideal candidate should have a strong background in STEM, with experience in experimental research, 3D printing, microfluidics, COMSOL simulations, and preferably SolidWorks. These qualifications will enable them to effectively contribute to the research project focused on optimizing and proving the principle of gap architectures for micro-capacitor-based artificial muscles.

Job Task:

  • Conduct design, parameter sweeps, and optimizations of gap architectures of artificial muscles by COMSOL simulations.
  • Produce theoretical proof of principle of the gap-based artificial muscles by COMSOL simulations.
