The Teacher is a hands-on position responsible for implementing engaging instruction for the youth enrolled in the Caminos education program. This position requires excellent planning to meet the necessary Career and College Readiness Standards along with the academic and behavioral needs outlined in each student’s Personalized Education Plan. The position is highly collaborative and requires excellent documentation and organizational skills, as well as a working knowledge of the Spanish language.

What does this job do specifically?
- Essential Responsibilities:
- Model and act in accordance with BCC’s core values.
- Demonstrate and practice trauma informed leadership.
- Demonstrate applied knowledge of curriculum and the fundamental principles of psychology and human development.
- Demonstrate familiarity with cultural patterns existing within a community which may affect the behavior of students.
- Establish relationships with students on a group and individual basis, gaining their confidence and trust and imparting a sense of security.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Physically intervene and restrain male students, as necessary.
- Able to organize and plan the activities of Assistant Teachers.
- Instruct individuals and groups at appropriate developmental levels and maintain a lesson plan book clearly defining efforts to provide for individual differences.
- Be able to speak and understand Spanish to effectively accommodate the youth in the UAC classroom.
- Establish and maintain a safe physical environment conducive to learning.
- Write required reports/keep accurate and orderly records.
- Work effectively with other staff members in the interdisciplinary setting to address students’ needs.
- Participate effectively in Interdisciplinary Meetings, staff/teacher meetings, Planning Conferences, in-service training programs, Staff Meetings.
- Provide guidance and direction to assigned Assistant Teacher, ensuring that the Assistant Teacher demonstrates a participating role within the classroom.
- Expand on; adapt current curriculum programs to meet student needs.
- Develop education plans for all assigned students.
- Implement school-wide behavior management system.
- Share with other staff coverage for lunch periods, other times as needed.
- Perform other professional duties, as requested.
- Follow regulations and protocols outlined by the Office of Refugee and Resettlement (ORR)
- Follow regulations and protocols outlined by the Maryland State Department of Education
- Implement effective educational activities that satisfy the requirements of the student’s Personalized Education Plan
Hours of Operation for this Position:
Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This position follows Baltimore County School System for inclement weather.
Eligibility
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Certificated by Maryland State Department of Education in special education, or in the process of having application for provisional certification reviewed by the Maryland State Department of Education
- Maintain a current MSDE certification in special education by fulfilling necessary course/credit requirements
- Must be fluent in speaking both Spanish and English
Preferred Education and Experience:
- A master’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Certificated by Maryland State Department of Education in special education
- Certified, or in the process of being certified by Maryland State Department of Education in general education, secondary education or specialty area.
- Four years’ satisfactory teaching experience
- Experience teaching students with emotional and behavioral difficulties
