ABOUT THE ROLE
As a
Bilingual Family Peer Counselors support, empower, and guide Resource Parents (formerly called “Foster Parents”) and Relative Caregivers in Santa Clara County. Drawing upon your own personal experience, you assist caregivers with every step of their foster care journey – from walking them through the approval and training process and preparing for placement, to helping families advocate for their foster youth in school and court, to connecting families with resources for respite care and transition planning.

- Foster relationships with resource families, provide support services, assess needs, and make referrals as needed.
- Advocate for resource families by participating in child and family team (CFT) meetings, court hearings, investigation support, transition planning, and other significant meetings and conversations.
- Collaborate with other skilled resource team members to coordinate services, establish effective communication, and share critical information.
- Provide reliable assistance with child needs such as obtaining important child records, delivering essential supplies, coordinating daycare, school enrollment, etc.
- Establish dependable care for families in-person and via phone as needed.
- Be a support system for newly-licensed resource families during pre-placement, initial placement, and on-going placement as needed.
- Connect resource families in need of respite care to appropriate resources.
- Engage with Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) staff to address issues related to resource families and maintaining stable placements.
- Ensure that resource families know their legal rights particularly regarding the Juvenile Court Dependent Court Proceedings.
- Attend trainings to stay updated on Federal and State Laws related to resource parents, licensing criteria, policies, and practices pertaining to children in out-of-home care.
- Personal experience navigating the foster care system as a resource parent or foster child or relevant work experience working with the foster care system
- Bilingual in English/Spanish Required
- Experience helping families and caregivers navigate systems of care is also accepted.
- Ability to successfully engage with families and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Strong writing, organizational, and computer skills.
- Own vehicle, valid driver’s license, clean record and insurability with Seneca’s automobile policy
- Ability to engage and develop rapport with children from a wide variety of backgrounds
- Ability to provide consistency and behavioral limits through relationship-based interventions
- Clear TB test, health screening, criminal background check, and any other mandatory State or Federal licensing and certification requirements
- Must show proof of COVID-19, fully vaccinated and boosted
- Full-time; Monday - Friday
- Starting at $27 - $29.50 per hour.
- Mileage reimbursement
- Additional salary increase upon passing bilingual language proficiency exam.
- Annual performance evaluations provide the potential for a generous salary increase each year.
