The Skills Coach monitors and supervises students and residents in a school and residential treatment living setting. Observes the interaction and behavior of students and residents while engaged in various activities and maintains a safe and therapeutic milieu where the students and residents are involved in programmatic activities.

Provides individual coaching, conducts behavioral, social, and educational skill development group sessions. Observes behavior patterns to detect signs of emotional issues and implements behavior management techniques and appropriate intervention techniques. Builds a therapeutic rapport with the students and residents, avoids power struggles, and promotes an environment that is conducive to the student or resident being able to achieve maximum therapeutic benefit of the program. Document information into the electronic programs. Close all doors to each resident s room whenever you are following the daily schedule. Contraband search and body search performed daily. Follow the daily program schedule. Be professional and follow the attendance policy. Refer to the supervisors or the Treatment Team for assistance. Keep keys in your possession at all time. Rounds are performed according to the level of observations policy.

Acts as a team member with other professional staff members to develop treatment plans for residents, reports and documents student's and resident s progress, incidents, and treatment issues, attends staffing, and communicates with team members the specific needs and issues of each student and resident and the observations or concerns from group and individual sessions.

Performs paraprofessional work providing supervision, implementing behavioral and educational guidance for the students and residents while in the classroom.

Receives supervision from clinical staff related to interaction patterns with students and residents and other work-related issues and participates in trainings and workshops to enhance work performance and professional growth.

Prepares daily resident interactions entries, incident reports, and other required documentation and reports.

Maintains strict confidentiality and privacy of students' and residents' personally identifiable health information in accordance with HIPAA privacy rules and Facility policies. Meets mandatory staff development requirement per the standards of all regulatory and accrediting agencies.

Minimum Education


High school graduate or equivalent.

OR

Bachelors Degree in a Human Services field, preferred, not required.


Minimum Work Experience


Minimum of one 6 months in a behavioral healthcare setting with the population served.


Required Skills, Licenses / Certifications


Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

First Aide

Facility s approved Behavioral Management Program§ Valid Driver's License in good standing


General Requirements


Must be at least 21 years of age per Commonwealth of Virginia Interdepartmental Regulation of Children s Residential Facilities.


Required Skills Knowledge and Abilities


Communicate in English effectively and document information accurately. Communicate effectively with all disciplines involved in the care of the resident / student.

Ability to work well with others in a team setting and work well with a moderate level of direct supervision.

Possess basic knowledge of child and adolescent development, child care principles and practices, positive peer culture, and mental health principles.

Knowledge of basic psychiatric terminology.

Ability to develop healthy relationships with children and adolescents and consistently apply rules, expectations, and behavioral interventions.

Proficient with Windows, Outlook, internet research, MS Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
