JOB TITLE: Behavior Specialist

DEPARTMENT: YIT School

REPORTS TO: Assistant to the Director of Education

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

  • To assist in the supervision of students on school grounds, parking lots, and areas adjacent to the school to ensure proper conduct and class attendance, to exercise and enforce school rules and regulations pertaining to student behavior, order and conduct.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be present in the school environment in a proactive manner.
  • Supervise student behavior.
  • Intercede in and resolve student disagreements.
  • Escort students to class or to proper administrative office, as needed.
  • Supervise students in and around the cafeteria during lunch period.
  • Report incidents to school administrators.
  • Maintain safe environment for students and staff.
  • Perform other duties/assignments as directed by the administrator.
  • Maintain professional demeanor including language, behavior, and attire.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or
  • One to three months related experience and/or training, or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Basic skills.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: None required.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and school environment and community.
  • Maintain a safe work environment for students and other staff.
  • Maintains professional demeanor including language, behavior and attire.
  • Exhibits dependability arriving to work on time, keeping to schedule, and following proper procedure for work absences.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Equal amounts of walking and sitting.
  • Must be agile and able to use intervention techniques to avoid injury to self and students.
  • Close, peripheral and distance vision required.
  • Use of hands and arms necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Primarily inside with some outdoor exposure at student arrival and departure or special event.
  • Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic).
