The Automation Engineer will be responsible for assisting with the design and implementation of new and existing automation equipment for various pieces of plier manufacturing. This position will report directly to the Adv Manufacturing Manager. This role will focus on moving with agility to design and implement custom, new to world, machines to manufacture hand tools, safety, and packout products. This role conducts research, develops, and designs mechanical components, equipment, and systems while planning, directing, and coordinating project activities to ensure that project quality, cost, and timing goals are accomplished.
Your Role on Our Team:
As an Automation Engineer
  • Create robust machine design concepts and detailed drawing packages for custom designed machine build projects.
  • Complete mechanical design analysis as required to ensure the machine design will meet all project requirements.
  • Initiative to collaborate with Controls Engineers and Manufacturing teams to develop optimal design solutions.
  • Provide support for the implementation of the design, scale-up and automation of new and/or existing product manufacturing lines.
  • Identify areas of risk and work quickly to prototype and mitigate risk.
  • Work with component suppliers to specify and acquire quotes for machine commercial components that are needed for the machine design.
  • Perform manufacturing process related feasibility studies for continuous improvement of designs and product performance, throughput improvements, and capital planning.
  • Provide clear engineering information to project leaders, management and the domestic engineering teams through PowerPoint and graphical tools. Data must be presented in a manner that facilitates effective decisions.
  • Work with integration companies to ensure building of equipment follows best practices.
  • Occasionally serve as a technical resource to troubleshoot problems with manufacturing teams and suppliers in areas of expertise.
  • Support the mechanical debug activities to ensure the machine assembly and debug phases of the project are completed on schedule.

The TOOLS you’ll bring with you:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering Technology or related work experience.
  • Three or more years of relevant working experience
  • Experience with design and development of automated machinery
  • Preferred background from an automation integrator or machine builder
  • Proficiency in using Solidworks and/or NX modeling 3D CAD design software. Teamcenter experience is a plus
Other TOOLS we prefer you to have:
  • Strong analytical skills, knowledge, and experience in process evaluation tools: Design of Experiments (DOE), statistical data analysis, risk analysis, flow layout and other related engineering tools.
  • Ability to manage several simultaneous projects
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a hands-on attitude.
  • High interest in tools of the construction trades.
  • Ability to travel internationally and domestically as required (up to 15% travel).
  • Mechanical aptitude, including a broad knowledge of manufacturing process related activities such as fixture design, metal working, stamping, injection molding, machining, automated assembly, polishing, and grinding.
Working Conditions:
Manufacturing Plant
  • Required to carry and/or lift up to 25 pounds several times a day
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE). This may include, but not limited to: safety glasses and hearing protection.
  • Usually work indoors which may not be temperature-controlled. Occasionally work in outdoor spaces.
  • Are sometimes exposed to loud sounds and distracting noise levels.
  • Are occasionally exposed to contaminants.
  • Are occasionally exposed to hazardous equipment.
  • Sometimes work within a few feet of other workers.
Travel Requirements:
  • 10% (includes domestic and international travel for machine and/or concept evaluations)
