The Department of Performing Arts and Arts Leadership in the College of Arts and Sciences at Seattle University in Seattle, WA invites applications for a Full-time, Tenure Track Assistant Professor & Director of Choral and Vocal Activities position beginning in September 2023.

Seattle University seeks an inspiring choral conductor and educator to lead and administer our choral and vocal activities within the Department of Performing Arts and Arts Leadership, Music Program. The successful candidate will demonstrate creativity in programming including arrangements and pieces by composers of diverse backgrounds, excellence in choral pedagogy, and a commitment to inclusive teaching of Interdisciplinary Arts majors, non-majors, and university participants.

We seek candidates who will contribute to carrying forward the Department, College, and University goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Experience in choral work by BIPOC artists would help us support the department’s curriculum emphasizing social justice issues such as the historical roots of inequality and marginalization, and interpreting the diversity of human experience across world regions. The Director would also help contribute to the vision of both the College and University for equity, justice, and centering the margins.

SU's Music Program is a collaborative and supportive community of faculty and students, and the successful candidate will contribute to this by collaborating with adjunct music faculty and by mentoring students.

Teaching responsibilities include Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Conducting, and Applied Conducting, with the possibility of offering university core classes and aiding students in independent studies.

Responsibilities also include developing a trajectory of productive, quality scholarship. This includes progressive and continuing scholarship which may include scholarship based on the development of creative work and professional practice.

The Director of Choral and Vocal Activities also plays a vital role in organizing and leading educational outreach initiatives. Administrative responsibilities include managing choral budgets; event scheduling; coordinating with support staff; logistics; publicity for concerts, recitals, rehearsals, and events; purchasing music scores; and supervising a staff pianist and administrative assistant.

Vocal administration includes managing voice area recitals, degree recitals, juries, and studio assignments of new students.

Recruitment and advising responsibilities include internal recruitment among the student body for robust ensemble membership and administering choral placement for incoming students. Responsibilities of recruiting prospective students to Seattle University may include communication with high school teachers, professional associations, alignment with University Admissions, and meeting with prospective students.

Qualifications

  • DMA or Ph.D. in Choral Conducting or related area, with a strong emphasis and formal training in vocal pedagogy and singing experience. At least three years of professional experience as a choral conductor and singer, preferably at the university level.
  • Demonstrated success conducting choirs at the undergraduate level.
  • Evidence of artistic programming that demonstrates knowledge in the diverse choral repertoire for varying skill levels.
  • Demonstrated experience in contributing to choral outreach and recruitment initiatives.

Compensation at a Glance:

Salary Range: $68,000 - $74,000

Seattle University has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, and not based on a candidate’s gender or any other protected status.
