Overview:
The Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) is a division operating within the National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The NND performs research and development to detect, characterize, and monitor nuclear fuel cycle activities and nuclear explosions; develops concepts, approaches, and technologies to strengthen global security for nuclear and radiological material; and engages with federal agencies to enhance international nonproliferation regimes.
The Material Security and Counterproliferation (MSC) group which resides in the Materials Characterization, and Modeling Section, within the NND at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applications for a Nonproliferation Chemical Process Engineer, who will focus on preparation and handling of uranium materials to support ongoing nonproliferation research. This work will be performed as part of a multi-disciplinary team focused on the application of uranium chemical processing for national nuclear security missions.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the guidance of research and technical staff, manage support work for various nonproliferation research efforts across the laboratory. This includes communication with the relevant organizations, planning and execution of experimental work, and communication of results.
Assist research and technical staff to perform experiments, collect data, and summarize observations.
Design, build, and operate process equipment including reactive gas handling systems and associated control and monitoring systems.
Contribute as a team member and assist research and technical staff with day-to-day laboratory operations and maintenance.

Basic Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in STEM field or advanced technical degree.
Two or more years relevant experience in process chemistry/engineering
Experience working with radioactive material and familiarity with good radiological laboratory practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and/or to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to frequent and ever-changing needs
Experience with design and operation of vacuum systems
Electrical work experience including implementation of process control systems and data acquisition
