Reporting to the Dean, The Associate Dean for Student Success is responsible for all student-related activities, concerns, and records management across degree programs (i.e Pharm.D., Ph.D., dual degree, and masters) within the School of Pharmacy. The Associate Dean serves as a member of the School’s Executive Committee and participates in planning, budgeting and policy making for the School. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Student Services: The Associate Dean for Student Success is responsible for coordinating the planning, development and general oversight of student services programs used by professional and graduate students. Career-related workshops and activities are organized and conducted each year, including opportunities for career exploration, job-related skill development, experiential learning, internship placement, residency placement, fellowship placement, graduate program placement, and employment placement. The Associate Dean provides administrative support for the School’s Scholarship and Awards Committee and serves as an ex-officio member. This position is also responsible for overseeing and promoting student professionalism and serves on the School’s Professionalism Committee. The Associate Dean serves as a liaison to the Financial Aid Office and all other University offices dedicated to student services. The Associate Dean acts as an advisor to student organizations, through student leaders and faculty advisors, to ensure appropriate adherence to University policies, procedures, programming, and use of campus resources. The Associate Dean is responsible for coordinating the annual School of Pharmacy Hooding & Diploma Ceremony, White Coat Ceremony, and On-Campus Day.
  • Student Retention: The Associate Dean maintains responsibility for implementing effective retention strategies for professional, graduate, and dual-degree students. The Associate Dean serves as an educational counselor/advisor to students to facilitate academic progress. This includes the maintenance of a student mentor/ mentee network within the School. The Associate Dean oversees the School’s tutoring program and facilitates the development of student peer group support groups. Additionally, the Associate Dean serves as a member of the Academic Performance Committee for the Doctor of Pharmacy degree program and communicates committee actions to students. Finally, the Associate Dean collaborates with the Associate Dean for Admissions & Strategic Engagement to continually monitor student progression and adjust admissions practices and criteria to ensure the comprehensive admissions process adequately assesses preparation and maturity.
  • Staff Supervision: The Associate Dean oversees the Office of Student Success through the direct and indirect supervision of support staff. Routine tasks and duties are delegated in accord with University policy and guidelines. Annual written performance evaluations of personnel are conducted in a timely fashion
  • Administrative Function: The Associate Dean manages academic records for the professional degree program, assures institutional compliance with academic policies and procedures, and collects and reports progression data for the School, University and external constituencies. The Associate Dean oversees the scheduling of all courses, coordinates the assignment of classrooms, and assists students with University registration procedures. This position also prepares the School’s annual academic calendar for the professional degree program. This position is also responsible for completion of assigned industry surveys. The Associate Dean oversees the Student Executive Council.
  • Teaching Responsibilities: The position serves as a lecturer within the Continuous Professional Development course series offered in each of the Pharm.D. didactic years.

Minimum Hiring Standards

  • The School of Pharmacy supports a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment. The candidate must show demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
  • A terminal degree in a related field
  • Candidates must have extensive experience in student engagement including a minimum of 3 years of advising or other significant student interaction/mentoring at the university level.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, problem solving, time management skills
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and provide effective problem solving
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

Preferred Hiring Standards

  • Training, degree work, or experience in counseling, social work, or psychology related fields
  • Working knowledge of Banner, Canvas, PharmCAS, and Google (Docs, Forms, Spreadsheets)


Salary Range: $100,000 - 110,000
