Description of Duties:
As a research-focused university, SUNY Polytechnic has established a diverse research portfolio and is focused on sustaining and growing its research capacity and extramural funding. SUNY Polytechnic's Office of Research is responsible for oversight of research activities, promotion of research, research compliance, and interfacing with the Offices of Sponsored Programs, Finance, and Technology Transfer. This office is also responsible for ensuring compliance with a number of new federal regulations including, but not limited to, data management, data security, conflict of interest, and confidentiality. The Assistant Vice President of Research, under the leadership of the VP for Research, will be responsible for the management, oversight and performance of these various activities and initiatives, across both campus locations (Utica, NY and Albany, NY). This position has the authority to affect, create and implement policy.
The primary role of the Assistant Vice President of Research position is to provide day-to-day oversight of the Office of Research and to directly interact with SUNY Polytechnic faculty to find and distribute information about funding opportunities, assist faculty with grant proposal development, help to build collaborative research teams, and to maintain a university-wide database of faculty research expertise and interests. This position will have responsibility in creating and implementing research policies. As a member of the Office of Research, the Assistant Vice President of Research will also help to develop university-wide strategies for increasing research output and improving the visibility of SUNY Polytechnic's research accomplishments at the state and federal level. As such, this position will be responsible for soliciting annual research accomplishments summaries from faculty and compiling an annual university-wide research report. This position will be responsible for research programs which includes the collection, analyzing and summarizing of research-related data (publications, technology disclosures, funding, etc.) to be used for reporting and to track the progress of SUNY Polytechnic's research program on platforms, media and reporting channels through both SUNY and the SUNY Research Foundation (SUNY RF)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Responsible for research proposal development with faculty at both the Albany and Utica campus locations, and implementing strategic priorities including:
- Identify grant / funding opportunities for faculty
- Responsible for outreach to faculty to promote specific funding opportunities
- Leading proposal development and networking/team development
- Interfacing with Office of Sponsored Programs as a liaison for faculty
- Leading the development and preparation of large team (multiple PI) proposals and center-level proposal
- Responsible for the development and implementation of strategic initiatives of faculty research activities and programs, including:
- Meet with faculty and coordinate faculty research expertise and interests
- Facilitate and lead faculty with networking and collaborations
- Responsible for the promotion and oversight of Poly research including implementation and leveraging of the economic and entrepreneurial development resources on campus to increase the Poly research portfolio and including:
- Creating research reports
- Responsible for creating the annual research report within SUNY Polytechnic and disseminating to external partners, and potential funding sources.
- Develop and implement strategies for promoting SUNY Polytechnic's research capabilities and expertise.
- Continuous professional development by participating in workshops, conferences and other forums to learn best practices for promoting and expanding research, and to specifically promote SUNY Polytechnic research.
- Responsible for leading the following:
- Strategic planning
- Tracking and development of research initiatives
- Responsible for co-leading with the Vice President of Research and Principal Investigators with SUNY RF compliance requirements, information requests, and coordination of forums/educational opportunities
- Responsible for research related data providing review and analysis, including publications, research products, funding, technology disclosures, and intellectual property filings.
- Responsible for various types of reporting as assigned by the VPR.
- Oversight and leadership of the administrative staff in the office as well as other professional employees as the office grows. Provide leadership, oversight and direction to direct reports to assure goals, programs, activities, and personnel practices are consistent with and contribute to the Institution's goals and strategies. Design and implement operating strategies, plans and procedures to assure smooth functioning of SUNY Poly. Lead employees for maximum performance and dedication. Complete performance management feedback and goals timely and per requirements.

The primary location for this position is in Utica, with possible travel to other operating locations.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
Master's degree in business administration, science, technology, engineering or related field from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
- 2 to 5 years' experience with grant writing or grants development
- Strong oral communication, presentation, and writing skills as demonstrated by successful grant submission
- Demonstrated effective organizational and time management skills
- 2 to 5 years in a progressively responsible leadership role; experience with team building / networking
- Demonstrated ability to work independently / in a self-directed manner
- Proficient with the use of technology such as Microsoft products, analytical data management and reporting tools, and statistical analysis software
- Prior experience with research support and/or management, with specific emphasis on the development of research grants / proposals.
- Ability to assimilate information from a wide variety of research fields (spanning basic science, engineering, business, health sciences and humanities).
- Must demonstrate an ability to work with a culturally diverse population.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
PhD degree in business administration, science, technology, engineering or related field from college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
