Assistant Superintendent, Strategic Innovation Job at Virginia Dept of Education
The Virginia Department of Education is seeking a qualified and experienced individual that will report to the VDOE Chief of Staff and work collaboratively with the Assistant Superintendent of Public Instruction. This position will provide a comprehensive review of all innovative school options, including but not limited to, college partnership laboratory schools, Governor’s Schools, charter schools, magnet schools, CTE specialty schools, and virtual schools to identify and share best practices. The incumbent will also provide a comprehensive review of innovative options within division schools, including but not limited to, work-based learning such as apprenticeships and internships, industry-recognized credential attainment, dual enrollment, and course access and course choice programs.
The review will also include an on-going assessment of data, evaluate and present a trajectory of learning and related issues present for the Commonwealth’s students, including learning loss recovery recommendations, compile educational and student pathways and outcomes, and develop other strategic planning as directed. This position is required to file an annual State of Economic Interest Form in accordance with the
Code of Virginia, § 2.2-3114.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to research, assess, develop, and implement strategic educational initiatives
- Ability to manage large scale instructional improvement programs and to communicate complex information to various audiences orally and in writing
- Knowledge of education and the application of technologies in K-12 teaching, learning, and management
- Understanding of the College Board Advanced Placement, Career and Technical Education, and other programs and guidelines
- Ability to establish and maintain strategic partnerships
- Knowledge of Virginia’s educational accountability program, particularly the Standards of Learning and assessment programs; curriculum and instructional practices; local, state, and federal education policies and procedures; and uses of educational data and technology for teaching and learning.
- Must have extensive interest and experience in education and workforce related fields; project management that includes data analysis, program assessment, and policy implementation;
- Demonstrated ability for visionary thinking, novel solutions, and exemplary analytical abilities;
- Able to manage multiple priorities and working with ambiguity;
- Demonstrated interpersonal, public relations, and organizational skills;
- Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to foster positive working relationships;
- Strong writing, plus computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Access;
- Displays maturity and ability to work independently;
- Strong time management skills; ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited college/university with studies in Political Science, Education, or Business Administration (preferred)

- Successful candidate must pass a criminal background check.
