Rank: Assistant ProfessorCollege/School: Chicago, IL - College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences
Responsibilities:The Department of Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) at DePaul University seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Latin American and Latino Studies to start in Fall 2023.
Applicants should be prepared to teach courses in their area of specialization, core and elective Latin American and Latino Studies courses, as well as core liberal arts courses, including a first-year seminar and/or an interdisciplinary sophomore seminar on multiculturalism in the U.S. Since DePaul is on the quarter system, the position entails teaching two courses per quarter (six courses) each academic year, as well as participate in the department’s meetings and activities organized by the unit.
Latin American and Latino Studies students bring a rich array of backgrounds, identities and experiences to the Department, including but not limited to first-generation students, differently abled and non-traditional students and students from underrepresented ethnic and gender identities. The successful candidate must therefore have a demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds.
The Department of LALS invites candidates to consider their engagement with a number of exciting new initiatives, focused on expanding its curriculum, and recruiting and retaining students of color. We have just launched a new degree in Latino/a Culture and Communication -only three similar degrees exist across the US- in coordination with the College of Communications. LALS is also a core part of the Social Transformative Research Collaborative (STRC), a Mellon-funded program which supports the retention of diverse faculty and students through research fellowships and other initiatives. Finally, LALS faculty are actively working together with partners across campus to achieve a Hispanic Service Institution (HSI) status. We look forward to hiring someone who wishes to advance these and other initiatives.
We seek a scholar who holds a Ph.D. in a relevant social science, humanities, media studies or interdisciplinary program by the time of appointment and whose teaching and scholarship is grounded in both Latin American and Latino Studies. We particularly welcome candidates in areas including transnational and border studies; immigration; those who take comparative approaches to different Latino groups and/or specializing in some aspect of Afro Latin America, Afro Indigenous and/or Indigenous Latin America from the Early Modern period until the present day. Scholars may be focused on specific populations in countries like Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Panama, Venezuela and Mexico, but transnational approaches are also desirable. The successful candidate will show evidence of an active research agenda and a commitment to excellence in teaching.
DePaul also seeks candidates with demonstrated cultural competencies to include teaching, service and research in diverse learning communities.
Special Instructions to Applicants:DePaul University is a private institution with over 21,670 students, located in the heart of Chicago. The university is committed to a diverse faculty, and we particularly encourage applications from scholars who identify with populations historically underrepresented in the academy and/or who have a proven record of mentoring students from underrepresented backgrounds. We will begin to review applications on December 1st, 2022, and the position will remain open until filled. Interested candidates should provide: 1. A cover letter, 2. A Curriculum Vitae, 3. An article-length example of research and one additional writing sample, 4. Three reference letters, 5. Syllabi, and 6. Evidence of successful teaching [student evaluations]. A one-page or less statement outlining your commitment and contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion is optional. All materials must be submitted electronically.
