Job Summary
Gonzaga University’s School of Nursing and Human Physiology (SNHP) in Spokane, WA has proposed a plan to reimagine itself as the School of Health Sciences. The school builds on Gonzaga’s commitment to human sciences and health professions in the Jesuit, Catholic, humanistic tradition. Currently in discussions about adding programs in public health, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and social work, among others, the school will create an innovative and collaborative approach to health scholarship, teaching, and practice at Gonzaga.
To those ends, Gonzaga seeks to hire a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor to serve both short-term and long-term goals related to building new program(s), creating discipline-related infrastructure for students and faculty, setting research goals, teaching, collaborating on assessment and accreditation processes, and leveraging networks of community partners. A qualified candidate will be eligible for a position at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor in Public Health and after completing the initial phase focused on program development and special projects, will assume full-time teaching and research duties outlined in the long-term essential functions.

Essential Functions
Short term:
  • Collaborate with Dean, school/university administrators, and select faculty to develop a Master of Public Health (MPH) program proposal for internal and external consideration and approval
  • Offer expertise for curricular development in the areas of public/community health program development, evaluation, and assessment; research and analysis; health behavior prevention and promotion; public health practice; and relevant topics related to public/community health/human development
  • Ensure program planning is framed by external accreditors’ stated competencies, tenets, and philosophies with particular emphasis on the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)
  • Engage in strategic planning initiatives related to bachelor’s- and master’s-level program development in health sciences
  • Represent the School on university-level academic councils, sub-councils, and committees
  • Network with community partners to gauge the capacity and lobby for Gonzaga students in Public Health to have applied learning experiences in and outside of Washington State


Long term:
  • Collaborates with faculty to ensure the integrity of health curriculum
  • Ensures compliance with CEPH accreditation standards and local guidelines for Public Health practice for faculty and students
  • Provides cohesion across all levels of Public Health programs through regular communication and meetings with faculty and administrative colleagues
  • Plans and coordinates the scheduling of courses with other faculty and administrators
  • Serves as program liaison with community agencies and collaborates with staff to provide applied learning experiences for students
  • Teaches 12-24 credits annually of courses on topics related to overall topics of public and community health (including but not limited to health promotion and prevention, social ecological model of health, relevant theoretical frameworks and conceptual models, and public health practice), including summer term as needed (additional 6 credits paid on a separate contract) and conducts research in accordance with personal and departmental academic interests
  • Provides academic advising to students in Public Health
  • Provides program updates and reports at departmental councils/committees as requested
  • Other related duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned doctoral degree in a field related to Public/Community Health; other disciplines are acceptable if a master’s degree is in Public Health or a relevant health profession/field, and there is sufficient Public Health practice and/or research experience
  • Evidence of administrative leadership knowledge including with curriculum development, program planning, evaluation, and assessment processes
  • Demonstrated ability to work with interprofessional teams fostering a high degree of collaboration and innovation
  • Ability to create inclusive learning environments that address the needs of diverse learners, including students from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented or underserved
