The Department of Chemistry at Philander Smith College invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor. Candidates with expertise in any area of chemistry are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate-level courses and laboratories in Chemistry including upper-division electives in inorganic, analytical, and/or physical chemistry; involve and mentor undergraduate students in research; and participate in academic advising, program development, and institutional committee assignments.

Required qualifications:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry and post-doctoral experience with documented evidence of strong scholarly activities and essential communication skills that are consistent with competence in higher education teaching (i.e., lecture delivery, small group student interactions). The successful candidate has a strong commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Additional Job Responsibilities:

Promote student-centered education, preparations, and research and laboratory techniques needed to assist the student in excelling in the field of Chemistry.

Promote undergraduate research in the field, bringing innovative experience as a STEM mentor. Illustrate efforts to stay abreast of new developments and advances in your field. Illustrate scholarly research in the field of chemistry and/or integrated fields.

Possess excellent spoken and written communication skills.

Instruct students with various learning styles as well as incorporate team-based learning. Incorporate technology into the teaching and learning of chemistry.

Identify knowledge of appropriate pre-test and post-test assessment.

Participate in departmental, divisional, and campus-wide meetings.

Where appropriate, conduct research and publication in peer reviewed journals.

Join and participate in professional associations appropriate to undergraduate chemistry faculty.
