Assistant Prescribed Fire Module Leader Job at Virginia Dept of Forestry
The Virginia Department of Forestry is seeking an assistant prescribed fire module leader. This position will be based at the VDOF Waverly office and work in the Departments Central and Eastern Regions. This position will serve as an assistant leader for a prescribed fire module. This module will assist the Department with the preparation, completion, and follow-up monitoring of prescribed fires on public and private land. This person will lead four module members in all aspects of prescribed fire operations such as line construction, heavy equipment operation, use of ignition devices (e.g. fusses, drip torches), patrolling fire line, and the use of water and hand tools to perform mop-up. May be assigned to assist in suppression of wildfires when needed. In times of unfavorable weather for prescribed burning, the assistant leader and module may be assigned to other duties within the Department of Forestry as needed including tool, building, and equipment maintenance, forest management projects, VDOF tree nursery operations, and landowner outreach. Must have the ability to negotiate different types of forested terrain on foot, and the ability to travel within the state of Virginia and stay overnight on occasion. The assistant module leader will have scheduling and immediate supervision duties in relation to the prescribed fire module. Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of National Wildfire Coordinating Group S-130 Fire Fighter Training and S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior courses. Valid drivers license. The ability to work in a stressful environment at times.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in prescribed burning and/or wildland fire fighting. Completion of NWCG S-212 power saw course. Possess class B Commercial Driver’s License. Experience in scheduling work groups. Experience in first line supervision of employees.
Special Requirements
Must pass moderate physical fitness test, per Federal guidelines. The test consists of walking 2 miles in 30 minutes carrying a 25-pound pack. Selected candidate is required to be drug tested and pass a criminal background check.
