Come join us at Allegheny County Parks Department’s Latodami Environmental Education Center! We are 250 acres within North Park’s 3,000+ acres, conveniently located just 13 miles north of Pittsburgh. The property consists of diverse habitats of fields, wetlands, streams, forests, ponds, and nature trails.
We are seeking an individual who is excited about working outdoors in resource/habitat management and environmental education.
All candidates must be in good physical shape and enjoy working outdoors. You need to be outgoing and enthusiastic, have good verbal and written communication skills, and be comfortable working with people of all ages.
We are looking for one paid ($12/hour), 40 hours/week, year-round individual who is available as soon as possible.
Required Skills/Experience/Qualifications:
- Experience in or knowledge of volunteer coordination
- Knowledge of best practices for trail maintenance
- Understanding of invasive plant removal methods
- Comfortable with public speaking and willingness to learn environmental education
- Possess a dynamic personality, energy and enthusiasm for the position.
- Exhibit a desire and the capacity to learn about the ecology and natural history of the flora and fauna of the region.
- Strong work ethic and ability to take initiative and act independently in preparing for scheduled tasks.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Must be very dependable and punctual.
- Be willing to work with others including team teaching in a supportive, respectful, and friendly manner.
- Willingness to work outside in any weather condition, in and around poison ivy patches, and tick
- infested areas.
- Must obtain Pennsylvania State child abuse clearances and FBI finger printing prior to employment.
Assistant Naturalist Role - Working with one of our staff naturalists, candidate will actively coordinate volunteer efforts to maintain habitats and trails at Latodami and assist inprograms to educate the public about our natural world and our relationship with it. Further role responsibilities:
- Maintaining, improving and developing wildlife habitats utilizing hand tools, to include: plantings; invasive removal; trails; orchards; arboretum; riparian; meadows; wetlands; vernal ponds, rain gardens; forest areas; educational signs; and fence placement.
- Construct, erect and maintain structures for birds and mammals.
- Develop outreach habitat programs and projects through video and boxed education kits.
- Develop and implement public stewardship programs.
- Curriculum development, scheduling, promoting, and implementing programs in a creative, enthusiastic, respectful and educational manner to people of all ages and abilities.
- Develop educational displays and signage.
- Participate in other ongoing activities as needed.
- Though primarily Monday through Friday, must be able to work a variety of evenings and Saturdays for public programs. 40 hours/week candidate preferred.
