Position Summary

The Metabolomics and Exposome Laboratory (MEL) at the UNC Chapel Hill Nutrition Research Institute is directed by Dr. Susan Sumner (Professor of Nutrition and Pharmacology), and the MEL Untargeted Resource Element is managed by the MEL Untargeted Resource Element Manager. The MEL Untargeted Analysis Element provides services in metabolomics profiling in support of basic, clinical, and translational research in a broad range of disease, intervention, and therapeutic areas.

The Research Technician Advanced position handles the day-to-day activities of the Untargeted Metabolomics/Exposome Resource Element, reporting to the MEL Untargeted Resource Element Manager, and provides training to new staff, leads the development of poster presentations, and contributes to the development of reports, presentations, and manuscripts.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Proficient experience in mass spectrometry for detection and identification of small molecules.
  • Proficient experience in sample extraction, preparation, handling, storage, and disposal of biospecimens derived from humans and model systems.
  • Proficient experience in proper storage and disposal of chemicals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and in leading projects.
  • Demonstrated strong critical thinking skills, self-direction & motivation, project management skills, communication skills, time management skills, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency working with Thermo software for high resolution mass spectrometry, Microsoft Office, UMetrics or equivalent software, and Mummichog or equivalent software.
  • Leadership in the development of posters, and experience in the development of figures, tables, and sections of reports, presentations, and manuscripts.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Bachelor’s in chemistry, biochemistry, or other related field.
  • Experience with acquiring data, formatting and preprocessing targeted mass spectrometry data, and untargeted MS data capture.
  • Experience with ultivariate analysis and pathway mapping.
  • Experience organizing and tracking standards in chemical inventories.
  • Experience matching MS/MS signals/fragmentation patters to RT, Exact Mass, MS/MS libraries and Public Databases.
  • Experience developing and expanding MS standard libraries.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NMR spectroscopy-based metabolomics.
  • Experience with HPLC separation techniques.
