Assistant Attorney General/Transit and Mobility Unit Manager Job at Virginia Attorney General
The Virginia Office of the Attorney General seeks an attorney to serve as a senior advisor to an attorney for the Commonwealth entities in the Transportation Secretariat.
The Transit and Mobility Unit Manager will serve as senior counsel to the agencies and authorities of the Transportation Secretariat which promote the mobility and transit of people and goods throughout the Commonwealth. This attorney serves as a senior advisor to the Department of Motor Vehicles, Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program, and Motor Vehicle Dealer Board, Department of Rail and Public Transportation, and Department of Aviation. As needed, the attorney may provide counsel to the Secretary of Transportation regarding transit and motor vehicle issues. The attorney also may provide assistance to the Virginia Port Authority, Virginia Passenger Rail Authority, and Virginia Commercial Space Flight Authority.
The attorney will serve as lead counsel or supervise the work of other assistant attorneys general and outside counsel serving as lead counsel in agency litigation matters, including representing the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Motor Vehicle Dealer Board in state and federal courts. The position also involves legal review and advice regarding legislative bills and initiatives coming from the General Assembly.
As Unit Manager, and in collaboration with the Section Chief, the attorney will provide day-to-day supervision of the workload and work product of a team of attorneys and support staff within the T&M Unit. The ability to work effectively with attorneys working from locations around the Commonwealth is essential. The work includes providing regular feedback to attorneys and support staff on their work, seeking out opportunities for attorney and staff development, and understanding each team member’s professional goals. The Unit Manager is responsible for supervising the dispute resolution, administrative claim, and litigation work of the attorneys in the T&M Unit and directing strategy.
This position is located in Richmond. The position offers flexible hybrid work options and reports to the Chief of the Transportation, Infrastructure and Construction Section. As with all positions, other duties as necessary or appropriate may also be assigned. Some overnight travel may be required.

Minimum Qualifications
The T&M Unit Manager must have demonstrated experience with the statutory and regulatory requirements which guide Department activities and decision-making. Experience advising senior level executives and government officials is required. Candidates should have experience advising on operational risk as well as the ability to communicate well with all levels of understanding regarding legal issues. Candidates must have excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to lead a team of professionals, including attorneys, outside counsel, title agents, surveyors, and outside counsel. The qualified individual must be admitted to or eligible for prompt admission to the Virginia State Bar.
