OVERVIEW: Under direction, the class coordinates, manages and monitors the planning and design of airport improvement projects focusing on the effectiveness of the design, impacts to passenger flow, adjacent facilities or building infrastructure, compliance with codes and standards, proper use of finishes and its sustainability attributes. The class supervises the review of capital improvement and tenant projects at each phase of development for compliance with aviation industry best practices and technical specifications and facilitates these projects with CDA divisions, local, state, and federal agencies, City of Chicago departments, airlines, and concessions. The project size ranges from considerable scope and complexity to small scale renovation work and from airfield runway projects to large scale facility projects
DUTIES: Coordinates and supervises the work of an architectural section responsible for the planning and design of a broad range of construction and renovation projects or functions as a project manager for large scale architectural projects of considerable scope and complexity. Oversees consultants and supervises in-house architectural staff engaged in establishing design criteria, project schedules, and cost estimates for architectural projects. Confers with senior managers in various Chicago Department of Aviation divisions to discuss the need for new construction, expansion or renovation of Aviation facilities; reviews completed design plans of staff and private consultants to ensure compliance with project specifications, space and usage requirements, building and zoning codes and funding guidelines. Supervises and conducts visits of field sites to monitor work in progress and to ensure compliance with project schedules, contract specifications and reviews project change orders for appropriateness and recommends approval according to adherence to established policies and procedures. Interprets architectural plans to consultants and provides technical assistance to subordinate staff in resolving complex architectural design problems; coordinates and participates in design and progress applications meetings. Supervises the preparation of administrative and technical reports and generates comprehensive summaries of current and completed projects. Plans and implements work standards and evaluates the performance of architectural staff; conducts and facilitates staff training on new or modified plan review processes and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned by senior management and other related duties as required.

THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM THE CAREER SERVICE.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Architecture plus five years of professional architectural work experience in the planning, coordination and development of major architectural projects, of which three years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience, provided that the minimum degree requirement is met.
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
Registration as a Professional Architect (R.A.) in the State of Illinois is required.
This position may require a valid State of Illinois driver’s license at the time of hire.

Preference will be given to those possessing the following:
Expertise in using PRIMAVERA P-6 software or other critical path method scheduling software.
Expertise and knowledge of the Chicago Building Code, OR International Building Code
Completion of certain number of distinct, complex projects in permitting for the City of Chicago OR other large U.S. Municipality.

VETERANS PREFERENCE: The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.

Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
