Position Title: Appraiser or Appraiser Trainee (commensurate with experience and qualifications)

Position Summary:
Colonial Farm Credit has an excellent employment opportunity for an Appraiser or an Appraiser Trainee in its Administrative office. Under the direction of the Chief Appraisal Officer, the position:

  • Completes appraisals and evaluations of real estate loan collateral within the Association’s chartered territory in Virginia (see counties below) following sound appraisal principles, valuation techniques, and Association procedures
  • Collects, verifies, and documents sales and other market data
  • Markets and completes fee appraisals
  • Completes non real estate appraisals and evaluations of loan collateral including personal property and chattels such as crops, livestock, equipment, and inventory involved in a lending transaction and evaluations of loan collateral in a specialized area or industry such as timber, wineries agribusiness; researches the market/industry of the region’s major agricultural commodities; verifies member’s assets and members’ cost investment in growing crops
  • Develops and maintains real property sales data and personal property auction information for use in the evaluation and appraisal functions; Maintains and ensures loan officers receive current data on properties that represent a cross section of the industries served
  • Maintains knowledge of current real estate values and changes occurring in the area, as well as agricultural economics that may impact value
  • Continues to improve skills through the pursuit of continuing education in appraisal and related fields
  • May assist in reviewing appraisals of contract fee appraisers

Education, Experience, and Requirements:
Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field
  • General knowledge of principles of real estate appraisal and application of the three approaches to value as well as Federal, state (Virginia) and local laws affecting real estate and chattel values
  • Meets state (Virginia) appraisal requirements or be willing to pursue professional designation through a recognized appraisal organization (ARA, ASA or MAI) and/or a state license as a General Real Property Appraiser dpor.virginia.gov/Appraisers/Experience-Requirements
  • Specialized appraisal training from internal and external sources such as American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers
  • Resides within Colonial Farm Credit’s chartered territory*
  • Demonstrates attention to detail
  • Possesses a working knowledge of customized appraisal software
  • Current on real estate values and property developments
  • Able to travel and works flexible hours when necessary
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Outlook, word processing (Microsoft Word), spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel)
  • Ability to:
    • effectively prioritize and handle multiple tasks
