The Ulster BOCES Center for Innovative Teaching & Learning (CITL) Student-Based Programs is seeking Crisis Intervention Specialists for full-time, 10-month positions for the 2023-2024 school year. Minimum of two years direct experience working with students who have special needs and who benefit from proactive and positive behavior supports. Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training and background preferred. All Civil Service laws, rules and regulations apply. Fingerprinting required.

Ulster BOCES provides programs for students ages five through twenty-one who are identified as needing specialized programs and/or supports according to their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Special Education programs are offered at Ulster BOCES sites in Port Ewen, NY and in leased classrooms in component school districts. They have been developed and offered to meet the specific needs of our students in order to assist them in realizing their potential to achieve both academically and socially.

The following programs are available in Special Class configurations of 12:1:1, 8:1:1, 8:1:2, 6:1:2 and 4:1:2. All classes are staffed by a full-time Special Education teacher and either one or two teaching assistants (additional supplementary 1:1 aides may be requested for individual students as per Committee on Special Education recommendations). Multiple programs are available.

Civil Service Classification: Competitive. Merit and fitness competitive examination applies.

Salary: $51,309.00

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The work involves the responsibility of applying crisis intervention methods and practices within a population of at risk students in order to maintain order and safety. An incumbent in this class is responsible for monitoring and patrolling the hallways, cafeteria, bathrooms and outside areas at a school watching for signs of disturbances, violations of law or other circumstances requiring intervention. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher level employee. An incumbent is required to exercise personal judgment when necessary in order to handle problem situations in conformance with school policy and procedure. Supervision is not normally exercised over the work of others. Does related work as required.

Incumbents in this title may perform some or all of the following, as well as other related activities not described.

WORK SCHEDULE :
10 Month Schedule, September through June
Monday through Friday
8:00 a.m. - 2:40 p.m.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Either:
A. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience in working with an at risk youth population and/or applying methods of crisis intervention in an at risk youth environment; OR
B. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and 10 months experience as a teacher aide in a school district which serves an emotionally challenged student population; OR
C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as described in A and B above.

Special Requirement: Certification in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention NYS DSS/Cornell University Method or other similar methodology may be required. A candidate appointed at Ulster County BOCES is required to successfully complete, during his or her probationary period, 30 hours of formal training in behavior management and crisis intervention response.
