This position will begin at our Brooklyn Animal Care Center and will be moved in the Spring of 2023 (with the entire Brooklyn team) to our brand new care center at 1906 Flushing Avenue, Ridgewood Queens – just 15 miles from the Brooklyn location. This is a historic opportunity to work at NYC’s first state of the art animal care centers and the first of its kind in the borough of Queens. The space is modern, filled with natural light and has nearly 4 times the space for staff and animals as the Brooklyn care center. During your tenure at the Queens care center, the Brooklyn center will be completely renovated and expanded and you will have the flexibility to consider a position at the new Brooklyn care center once the construction is completed there. Summary
The Animal Care Specialist provides a high standard of animal care to ensure the welfare of animals at the ACC Care Centers. With a primary responsibility to provide and maintain a clean, healthy living environment for each animal, the Animal Care Specialist has extensive, close interactions with those animals, empowering them as a source of vital information on the health, behavior, and needs of each animal. By taking note of and responding to this information, as well as through communication with others, the Animal Care Specialist ensures that ACC’s animals are provided with an environment and experience that supports both their physical and mental/emotional health.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a high standard of animal care and welfare, which includes providing scheduled feedings, clean water at all times, proper bedding and enrichment toys.
- Properly clean and sanitize kennels, wards, cages, equipment and areas of shelter as assigned, according to ACC policy and procedure. Bathe or clean animals immediately if they become soiled
- Exercise and socialize with animals on a regular basis while abiding to ACC’s dog walking guidelines
- Observe and document unusual behavior, signs of illness and any injury of an animal on a daily basis. Communicate vital information to medical, behavior, adoptions and New Hope departments as needed
- Restrain, confine, handle animals, including those which are ill, injured, quarantined, and aggressive
- As directed by medical staff or supervisor, provide pre-surgery care and preparation to animals
- Conduct Lost and Found tours with members of the public
- Be knowledgeable and conversational on ACC policies and common animal welfare practices
- Provide excellent customer service to individuals utilizing ACC services, ranging from warm greetings and hellos to providing more in depth information about specific animals
- Work cooperatively with ACC volunteers and partners
- Process animal intakes as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Salary and Benefits:
$15.00/Hour

Qualifications*
Ability to excel in a fast-paced, often high stress environment; treats animals and people with respect; has attention to detail and a strong work ethic to complete tasks correctly; is a confident communicator; is a people person and a team player, willing to pitch in to help others and ensure the needs of the animals are met; available to modify schedule as needed to meet the needs of the organization, including with little notice; possesses a love of animals and is able to interact with them in a calm, non-threatening manner; bilingual preferred; Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and work standing for 8 hours or more.
Education and Work Experience
This is an entry level position. While previous animal care experience is a plus, all that is required is a positive, compassionate attitude.
Work Environment:
At ACC it's all hands-on deck. We work together as a team, which means you may be asked to help with tasks that involve working outside in all sorts of weather. As a busy animal shelter in one of the biggest cities in the world it can get noisy inside. Employees should have the ability to remain calm yet professional in stressful situations involving animals and/or members of the public. ACC houses hundreds of animals in its facilities at any given time and with that comes fur, odors and other airborne particles in abundance.
ACC offers many low-cost services to pets and people in need. This includes compassionate end-of-life services for people who cannot afford to go to a private veterinary office but still want to provide a professional and peaceful transition for their beloved pet.
