JOB DESCRIPTION TEMPLATE

TITLE: Advanced Scientist, Air Filtration – West Groton, MA

POSITION SUMMARY:

Participates in research and development activities linked to new product and process development initiatives using established mathematical and scientific techniques.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

o Lead product or process development projects. o Work directly with customers and Division Sales & Marketing to develop new products for existing markets identified by the division. o Develop expertise in appropriate materials technology, as necessary to plan, execute and evaluate laboratory and machine-based trial programs, using the Design of Experiments methodology. o Use appropriate DFSS/DFM tools and InnoHVision stage gating process for development projects. o Work with manufacturing, purchasing and technology on Margin Improvement Initiatives (MIPs). o Benchmark competitor grades and technologies. o Patent novel inventions. o Interface internally and externally. o Develop introductory relationships with customers and vendors. o Provide technical guidance to management, divisions, customers and manufacturing on new and modified product development efforts. o Communicate plans and results effectively. o Influence scientists and managers at multiple locations. o Supervise laboratory technicians to achieve product development objectives and develop technician’s technical and personal skill base to maximum potential. o Provide technical reports and presentations to internal and external project stakeholders, including contributions to Atrium knowledge management system. o Understand the relevant end use application. o Assist Division Sales and Marketing with technical service in the selection of existing grades capable of meeting stated technical and processing requirements. o Keep abreast of relevant industry, applications and materials technology trends through literature, seminars and market contact. o Be knowledgeable about test methods used to determine physical characteristics of the material as well as its performance in the end use application.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: o BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science plus four years relevant work experience OR MS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science plus two years relevant work experience OR Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Fiber, Textile, Materials

Science or related fields o Strong leadership, project management, time management and communication skills. o Six Sigma Green Belt preferred. o Effective team participant in product or process development programs. o Basic knowledge of how to run a patent search for education, FTO or prior art purposes.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTS o Potential musculoskeletal stresses from repetitive motion of arms/hands, standing for prolonged periods, performing frequent bending and twisting motions, lifting of light weight objects. o Steady hands and dexterity to perform tasks repeatedly and accurately.

o Perform tasks that require constant state of alertness. o Work performed in laboratory environment with potential exposure to hazardous materials. o Work performed in production area with potential exposure to large equipment/machinery and loud noises.
