Summary of Position:
Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) in Grand Rapids, MI prepares artists and designers to have impact through practice. As a KCAD adjunct faculty member, your responsibilities in this appointment include syllabus and class preparation, instruction during scheduled course time, providing reasonable availability to students for consultation and assistance with respect to your assigned course(s), evaluation of student performance, submission of final grades on the FSU Banner system, and archiving of both course material and student work as requested by your program chair and/or the Dean of the College.

The program prepares students for careers in the fashion industry through key studio classes integrating concept development, design, materials, garment construction, pattern-making, draping, drawing, digital technologies and research/development. Program includes annual fashion shows, community collaborations, a fashion lab, and support courses in General Education and Art History add broader context to the program; with an optional senior year experience at the Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC.

Teaching assignments will include but are not limited to: design process for fashion and function, construction, patternmaking, draping, and textiles, as framed by the program outline. The faculty member should form a bridge between the students' academic/studio learning and the profession; thus, applicants should demonstrate significant experience in apparel design/development and a continuing, active connection to the fashion design industry. Courses are to be taught in person on KCAD’s campus in Grand Rapids, MI. The candidate(s) selected for the position must reside in Michigan after acceptance of employment.

Required Education:
Master’s degree in a related field to content being taught
or:
Master’s degree in unrelated field and additional minimum of 18 graduate credits in a field related to the content being taught
or:
A bachelor’s degree in a related field to content being taught, a minimum of six years of experience working in the field of industry of the content area being taught, and a combination of:
  • Evidence of recognized accomplishment in area being taught, including awards, bibliography of publication referencing design or art work or scholarship or;

  • Evidence of scholarly/creative accomplishment in terms of completed design work, patents, exhibitions, presentations, publication, and juried recognition at the regional, national and international level or;

  • Evidence of service to the field in terms of memberships on committees or boards of professional organizations and other contributions to the field

  • Required Work Experience:
    At least one year of industry experience in fashion or garment design and development with an active connection to the fashion industry.
    Evidence of successful professional practice.

    Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
    Prepare syllabus and class according to college standards and distribute syllabi.
    Teach appropriate course(s) as assigned.
    Assess and evaluate student learning and provide formative feedback throughout the course.
    Provide reasonable availability to students for consultation and assistance with respect to assigned course(s).
    Evaluate student performance.
    Submit final grades on the FSU Banner system.
    Archive both course material and student work as requested by program chair and/or the Dean of the College.
    Demonstrate an understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
    Perform any other duties assigned within the position classification area.

    Skills and Abilities:
    Proficiency in patternmaking by hand, draping and apparel construction methods with knit and woven materials, functional clothing design and fit analysis.
    Knowledge of textiles and emerging technologies in fashion/textiles.
    Proficiency in technical design and/or product development.
    Ability to manage and maintain the fashion construction lab with student employees.
    Demonstrated leadership qualities and effective communication skills.
    Utilize professional knowledge and experience for collaboration and teamwork within the classroom and throughout the college.
    Demonstrated commitment, experience and understanding for diversity, equity and inclusion.

    Teaching Philosophy - 300 words or less to include rationale for connecting and bridging studio Fashion Studies and the Fashion Industry.

    Portfolio - fashion design portfolio including illustrations and constructed garments-attach 10-20 (maximum) images of professional work and 10-20 (maximum) images of student work (if available): can submit valid web site address for portfolio work and images must be clearly labeled as professional or student work and must include a description that clearly states what part of the image is original work i.e. patterns, draping, construction, photography, styling, CAD.

    Unofficial Transcript 1(Required): Applicants must attach a copy of unofficial transcripts of degree as described in the Required Education section. Transcripts must include: Institution name, applicant name, date degree attained, and degree awarded. Finalist will be required to submit an official transcript.

    Candidates that do not have a Master’s degree will be required to have a combination of experience and accomplishment as outlined under the Required Education section. This combination must be clearly documented in your curriculum vitae/resume and application materials in order for the search committee to determine if candidates meet the required qualifications. For example, in order to determine if there is a minimum of six years of experience in the area being taught, the curriculum vitae/resume must clearly list dates of employment and all applicable experience should be listed. Evidence of recognized accomplishment, scholarly/creative accomplishment and service in the field must be detailed.
